The Advantages Of Having A Healthy Diet

One of the major reasons why people get overweight or suffer from minor and major health risks is that they don't practice having a healthy diet. Healthy diet--which include eating balanced amount of food from all food groups--along with exercise or regular physical activity can lessen people's inclination to health problems.

PLANNING ON A HEALTHY DIET

Experts say that though basic principle of healthy diet is simple, most people are having a hard time sticking to it. Major reasons may include a super busy lifestyle, work that causes a lot of stress or even an environment that is not conducive to having a healthy diet.

Although it is hard to start and maintain a healthy diet, nothing is impossible if you really want to achieve a healthy mind and body. For starters, it is advisable to mix up food choices from each food group. Eating a large variety of foods and veggies can also serve as a warm up in avoiding the foods that contribute to drastic weight gain. Having a balanced intake of calcium-rich foods, whole grains, and protein-rich products will also keep you in track.

To be able to maintain eating a healthy diet, you must also know your restrictions of fats, salt and sugars levels, and intakes. Lastly, you must monitor your body weight regularly for you to know if your body is absorbing all the nutrients it needs.

Here are more tips for eating well and achieving a healthy diet:

1. Meals based on starchy foods are a good start to a healthy diet. Experts agree that people should eat more starchy foods such as bread, cereals, rice, pasta, and potatoes because they are a good source of energy--not to mention being the main source of a range of nutrients of a person's diet like fiber, calcium, iron, and vitamin B.

2. Load up a lot of fruits and veggies. Eating at least 5 portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables a day is an ideal way to maintain a healthy diet. But, it is sometimes hard to achieve because people do not want to waste time peeling or chopping certain fruits and veggies. The best way to keep up with the recommended fruit and veggies intake if to eat a variety of fruits that are either fresh, frozen, canned or dried and picking out veggies that can be finger delights such as celery, broccoli, carrots, beans and peas.

3. Be more "fishy." Despite of the so-called "high mercury content" of fish, nutrition experts say that eating more fish--especially oily fish--is an important component of a healthy diet because it is a good source of protein, vitamins, and minerals.

4. Try to cut down on saturated fats and sugars. Do not totally cut down on fats because your body needs it to stay healthy. Basically, fats are categorized into saturated and unsaturated fat. The former has high amount of cholesterol and the latter has lower amounts that lowers blood cholesterol. Cut down only on foods that are high in saturated fat such meat pies, sausages, hard cheese, butter and lard, pastry, cakes and biscuits, cream and the like. Also monitor your sugar intake because aside from causing decay, sugary foods can also be high in calories that contribute to weight gain.

5. Eat less salt. Too much salt can raise your blood pressure.

6. Drink lots and lots of water to keep your body well-hydrated.

The Best Healthy Snacks for Traveling

We've all been in situations while we're traveling where we have to wait longer than anticipated and feel like we're starving. During times like those, we scope out our options in the airport or train station only to find that our healthy options are usually very limited (and generally overpriced as well). Then, you begin feeling desperate and the Cinnabon stand starts looking really good, even though you know you won't feel good about that snack later. This article will help you plan ahead, keep your energy levels balanced when you travel, and stay healthy even while on the go.

These convenient snacks can travel with you so you'll always have a healthy snack at your fingertips! When shopping for a healthy travel snack, look for foods that give you energy without a lot of sugar or caffeine. Snacks that are high in protein will keep you feeling full longer.

Healthy travel snacks that meet these criteria include:

Nuts - Just about any type of nuts are a good choice to keep your energy high (in moderation).

Trail mix - Trail mix generally includes a combination of nuts and dried fruits.

Travel-size peanut butter (Jif makes these in single-serve, disposable containers now)

Granola bars (just make sure they don't have too much sugar)

Energy bars - There are a lot of these on the market now, choose energy bars with low sugar and good flavor such as:

Larabars - a "raw" energy bar that tastes amazing, all fruit & nuts, no added sugar, and come in flavors like "cherry pie"

Clif bars - Try the "chocolate chip" flavor. It tastes like a cross between a brownie and a chocolate chip cookie!

Luna bars - "Nutz over chocolate" is one of the best flavors in this brand.

Another consideration is the convenience factor. You want snacks that are easy to carry with you and don't require refrigeration. Fruit is always a good snack, but can be difficult to transport and sometimes spoils easily.

A great alternative to fresh fruit is a "fruit leather." These are made of 100% fruit (no added sugar) and can even be made from organic fruits. Fruit leathers look like a fruit roll-up, but are much healthier for you. They come in many flavors including: mango, apricot, blackberry, strawberry, grape, apple, cherry, and more. You can find them in Trader Joe's, Henry's Marketplace, and some Whole Foods-like stores.

Healthy fruit snacks include:

Fresh fruit - Including apple, banana, grapes, etc. if you can keep them from getting bruised.

Fruit leathers

Dried fruit (such as unsweetened banana chips)

Pack a few of these healthy snacks in your travel bags and make sure that you're never left hungry and desperate in an airport or train station again!

Berries, Citrus Fruits And A Healthy Cancer Prevention Diet

Current research has shown that a number of readily available foods such as berries and citrus fruits that make up a healthy diet, actually have a major impact on cancer prevention. These cancer fighting foods seem to have the ability to interfere with the development of cancerous tumors. Cancer fighting foods all contain large amounts of certain phytochemicals. Phytochemicals were developed by nature to protect plants against damage caused by insects, disease and environmental stress. These phytochemical molecules are the ones that give fruits and vegetables their brilliant colors, provide the smell to garlic and the bitter taste to tea. It is very likely that these phytochemicals, not the vitamins and minerals, that are the source of the cancer prevention capabilities of these healthy foods.

Most berries are great sources of polyphenol phytochemicals which provide antioxidants and cancer prevention capability. These berries include: raspberries, wild blueberries, strawberries, cranberries, and blackberries. Even when berries aren't in season you can add frozen berries or dried cranberries to your breakfast cereal. Frozen fruits and vegetables are just as healthy as fresh fruits and, of course, can retain their nutritional value during the off growing seasons.

Raspberries contain large amounts of ellagic acid which is a powerful cancer fighting phytochemical compound. This molecule is a member of the polyphenol family of phytochemicals which seem to be able to control the growth of tumors. In addition, raspberries contain other polyphenols such as anthocyanidins which are responsible for the very strong antioxidant potential found in berries.

Wild blueberries or low bush blueberries are smaller, more compact and have a more intense flavor than their cultivated cousins. They also have much more antioxidant capacity and anthocyanin, proanthocyanidin and phenolic phytochemicals than cultivated blueberries. Wild blueberries have the most antioxidant potential of all fruits followed by cranberries, blackberries, raspberries and strawberries. The anthocyanidin and proanthocyanidin phytochemicals contained in wild blueberries, strawberries and cranberries are powerful antioxidants. It is the anthocyanidins in blueberries and raspberries that seem to inhibit cancer development.

Strawberries are another good source of polyphenol phytochemicals such as proanthocyanidin although they contain less ellagic acid than raspberries. Strawberries have about the same antioxidant potential as raspberries.

Cranberries are close cousins of the blueberries and have similar antioxidant and anti-cancer capabilities. Apart from accompanying turkeys at Thanksgiving and Christmas, cranberries are mostly consumed in the form of juice. Unfortunately because the cranberry is so acidic, large quantities of sugar are added to make the juice more palatable. Dried cranberries can also be added as a topping for cereals or fruit deserts.

Finally some mention should be made of the citrus fruits that make up the orange family. These include oranges, lemons, grapefruit and mandarin oranges. The orange family not only contains polyphenols like the berries discussed above but also terpenes. The phytochemical compounds found in citrus fruits seem to reduce the risk of developing digestive tract cancers. People taking prescription drugs, especially statins, have to avoid grapefruit as it doubles the amount of medication in the bloodstream and increases the side effects. Citrus fruits are excellent sources of vitamins and minerals but also phytochemicals that are required in a cancer prevention diet.

Eating a healthy balanced diet can provide our bodies with thousands of different phytochemicals every day. However not all fruits, vegetables and other plant products provide the best anti-cancer phytochemicals. The ten best groups of anti-cancer foods are discussed in our website www.benefits-of-antioxidants.com . They include: berries and citrus fruits, cruciferous vegetables, garlic and onions, green tea, omega-3 essential fatty acids, olive oil, tomatoes, soy products, red wine and dark chocolate.

A healthy Salmon, Potato and Fruit Salad evening meal For Two habitancy (Low on Calories, High on Nutrients)

The menu tonight is grilled salmon fillets, parsley potatoes, fresh fruit salad, and lemonade sweetened with stevia. The dinner is designed for 2 citizen but obviously the fruit salad would be four or more servings, so the leftover is chilled and kept in the refrigerator for serving at a later time.

Grilled Salmon Fillets
Two icy wild caught salmon fillets (about 2 ounces each) were thawed then patted dry with paper towels.
A soup bowl with about 2 tablespoons of olive oil was set up for coating the fillets.
Next to the soup bowl was about 1/4 cup flour on a dinner plate.
Both salmon fillets were seasoned on each side with lemon pepper.
The fillets were then dipped in olive oil to coat, then dredged with the flour.
A cast iron griddle was heated on high, then 2 tablespoons of olive oil was added.
When the oil was hot the fish fillets were placed on the grill without any shaking or sharp with a spatula.
After about 2 minutes (or when a visual inspection showed the fillets were about half cooked) they were flipped over.
After an additional one 2 minutes or so the browned fillets were transferred to serving plates.

Dried Fruit

Parsley Potatoes
Two medium sized potatoes were peeled and diced to 1/2 inch cubes.
The potatoes were then added to a saucepan with about 1 qt boiling, salted water.
After about 15 minutes when potatoes cubes were tender, they were drained straight through a colander.
About 1 tbsp of butter was added to the top and then about 2 tablespoons of dried parsley was sprinkled over the top.
The potatoes were then transferred to a serving dish.

Lemonade
1/4 cup of lemon juice was added to a 1 gallon pitcher along with 1 tablespoon of Stevia, then the pitcher was filled with
distilled water. (filtered water could be supplanted if you prefer)

Fresh Fruit Salad
One fresh pineapple was cut in half, lengthwise and then the tough core removed with a knife.

The brown skin part was then cut off all colse to along with the top and lowest and the pineapple was diced into 1 1/2 inch cubes.

1 pint of blueberries, the insides of an orange (diced), 4 kiwi fruits, peeled and thinly sliced, 1 apple peeled, cored, peeled and diced into 1/2 inch cubes, along with 1 large pear, done the same way, and 1 banana, peeled and sliced were all added to a large salad bowl and tossed by hand.

This simple meal was prepared in about 25 minutes and it was delicious.

Recommended Healthy Portion Sizes for Vegans and Vegetarians

It seems that many people today, with the various diets and lifestyles, lack the essential understanding and awareness of recommended serving sizes. Often we we will look at that handy and insightful nutrition information label, but we'll overlook the little part that tells us exactly how much of the product the nutrition facts actually apply to. In general and contrary to the common assumption among many people, the 'Nutrition Facts Label Serving Size' is not related to the 'Food Pyramid' recommended servings.

It appears that today the serving sizes that are being printed on products in the US "are more uniform and reflect the amounts people actually eat" (according to the FDA website). A level of concern about this may not be unfounded, especially considering rumors you may have seen on several websites (I have been unable to prove or disprove them) stating such unbelievable statistics as 40 percent of the average diet in America being comprised of dairy and only 8 percent being fresh fruit!

However, glancing at a few products, the serving sizes do seem reasonable so far, for instance 5 crackers amount to one serving. Therefore it would seem they may be studying the healthier half of the American population to derive these portions. There's no justifiable cause for over reaction to the aforementioned FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) statement at the current time. Thank goodness.

Still, I would like to provide for you a basic outline of suggested daily servings and portion examples for a balanced plant-based diet (source cited below):

Breads/Grains - 6 to 11 servings daily - 1 oz ready-to-eat cereal - 5 or 6 small crackers - 1/2 cup cooked cereal, rice, pasta, noodles - 1 slice of bread - 1/2 hamburger bun, English muffin ~ 1 small roll, muffin, biscuit

Vegetables - 3 to 5 servings daily 1/2 cup cooked beans, peas, legumes - 1 cup raw leafy vegetables - 1/2 cup cooked or raw vegetables - 3/4 cup vegetable juice

Fruits - 2 to 4 servings daily 1/4 cup dried fruit - 1/2 cup chopped fruit - 1 melon wedge - 3/4 cup fruit juice - 1/2 grapefruit - 1 medium apple, banana, orange

"Protein or Meat Group" Substitution - 2 to 3 servings daily 2 tablespoons peanut butter - 2 tablespoons nuts or seeds - 1/4 cup tofu or tempeh - 1 cup soy milk - 1 egg or 2 egg whites - 1/2 cup cooked dry beans or peas.

Milk/Yoghurt/Cheese - 2 to 3 servings daily 1 cup milk - 1.5 oz natural cheese - 2 oz processed cheese - 1 cup or 8 oz yoghurt

(To maintain a vegan diet you can substitute these animal products with nuts and seeds, tofu, kale, edible seaweeds, watercress, parsley, dried figs, or calcium fortified soy milk for example)

Fats, Oils, Sweets which are low in hydrogenated, saturated, and trans fats, to be used sparingly of course!

Tips to Develop Toddler Healthy Eating Habits

Limit desserts and sweets. Toddlers will get sugar one way or another, so your job is to moderate how much and how often. Research has shown that early introduction to sugary foods encourages sugar cravings in adulthood.
Fruit juice flunks out of the toddler bistro diet. You may think that fruit juice is a healthy option for your child—and it is compared to soda and sugary drinks—but note that fruit juice still has a high sugar content, and it lacks protein. Milk and water are bistro favorites.
Soda pop not! Toddlers should be drinking milk and water. Soda contains empty calories, meaning that its calories are missing vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Soda displaces better beverages like milk from toddler diets and can compromise the immune system, dehydrate, interfere with nutrient absorption, and contribute to obesity.
Water wise. Train your toddler early on to select water from the menu. This refreshment is popular when served in fun cups, and it can be flavored with slices of orange or other fresh fruits. Have refills available in hot weather and during highly active times. Watch for signs of dehydration: dark urine in small amounts, thirst, flushed appearance, headache, fever, tiredness, dry mouth, or fast breathing.

Organic Dried Fruit - The perfect healthy Snack?

Is organic dried fruit the perfect healthy snack? It may well be. If you are trying to lose weight, feel better, eat more foods that are very nutritious and rich in antioxidants, fruit is one of the keys. There are some reasons why eating dried fruit is a great idea.

One thing many citizen don't pay enough concentration to is their snacking habits. What you consume in in the middle of meals can be just as leading as your main meals. It's all too easy to get in the habit of munching on fattening and unhealthy 'foods" like chips, pretzels, candy bars and donuts during the day. These snacks are ordinarily very easy to find, whether from stores or vending machines at your place of work. These snacks are ordinarily high in sugar, sodium, synthetic ingredients and unhealthy fats.

Dried Fruit

Fruit makes an perfect substitute for such non-nutritious snacks. They are high in natural sugar, as well as antioxidants, which have been shown to be good for allinclusive health and the prevention of many diseases. While fresh fruit is nutritious and refreshing, it's not all the time practical. Your favorite fruits are not all the time in season. Fruit can be whether under or overripe. If you like bananas, for example, you've probably had the sense of a forgotten banana turning mushy and leaking into your car seat, pocketbook, backpack or carrying case!

Organic Dried Fruit - The perfect healthy Snack?

Dried fruit is all the time in season and is convenient to carry. If you are going to start eating more dried fruit, it's good to look for the organic variety. Regular dried fruit often has added sugar, which you actually don't need and counteracts the health benefits of natural fruit. Non-organic dried fruits may also comprise chemicals and synthetic ingredients.

You can find practically any collection of dried fruit. You may want to look for a mix that also contains nuts, which are a great source of protein and healthy fats. Or you can buy your favorite dried nuts and fruits separately and originate your own mix. These can be comfortably carried to work, school or in the car, train, bus or plane.

Children can also learn to love dried fruit, though if they are accustomed to candy it may take some reconditioning! If you have kids, this may be a project worth getting started on, however. Too much sugar has been associated to many problems with children, such as hyperactivity and strangeness in concentration. If your kids are hooked on sugar, don't try to get them to quit cold turkey. Introduce healthier snacks into their diet and gently get them to think of sweeter things like candy bars as special treats rather than something they eat throughout the day.

Introducing something like organic dried fruit into your diet may seem like a small step, but it's something that can make a real difference in your health and well being. For you are not only getting the many benefits of fruit in your diet, you are losing the many unhealthy substances that you can cut back on as you make this healthy switch.

Dried fruit is always in season and is convenient to carry. If you are going to start eating more dried fruit, it's good to look for the organic variety. Quarterly dried fruit often has added sugar, which you assuredly don't need and counteracts the health benefits of natural fruit. Non-organic dried fruits may also comprise chemicals and synthetic ingredients.

You can find almost any collection of dried fruit. You may want to look for a mix that also contains nuts, which are a great source of protein and healthy fats. Or you can buy your popular dried nuts and fruits separately and originate your own mix. These can be comfortably carried to work, school or in the car, train, bus or plane.

Children can also learn to love dried fruit, though if they are accustomed to candy it may take some reconditioning! If you have kids, this may be a scheme worth getting started on, however. Too much sugar has been related to many problems with children, such as hyperactivity and mystery in concentration. If your kids are hooked on sugar, don't try to get them to quit cold turkey. Introduce healthier snacks into their diet and moderately get them to think of sweeter things like candy bars as extra treats rather than something they eat throughout the day.

Introducing something like organic dried fruit into your diet may seem like a small step, but it's something that can make a real inequity in your health and well being. For you are not only getting the many benefits of fruit in your diet, you are losing the many unhealthy substances that you can cut back on as you make this healthy switch.

Healthy eating helps you manage diabetes

People with diabetes can eat a healthy balanced diet, the same as people without this condition. There is no need to buy special foods or prepare separate meals, so relax and enjoy healthy eating along with the whole family.
Diabetes is a condition in which the amount of glucose in the blood becomes too high because the body cannot use it properly.

Avoid the Vending Machine - Bring Healthy Snacks to the Office

Now that more and more corporations are instituting employee weight loss programs it is easier for employees to develop good eating habits in the workplace. Be prepared for the mid-morning or afternoon craving for a snack or a treat. Stay away from the vending machine and dig into your own bag of nutritional and healthy goodies.

Here are some tips for eating healthy snacks in the office:

Dried Fruit

o Raw nuts (organic if you can) are a great way to stave off hunger pangs. They are packed with nutrition and healthy oils. Stay away from roasted or processed because they are loaded with salt and oil. Raw almonds are great for dieting, walnuts, Brazilian nuts and Hazel nuts.
o Dried fruit is great to accompany the nuts. The two together are almost a meal in itself. Don't go overboard with the dried fruit because it is concentrated with sugar. If you can go organic, it's the better choice. Try organic raisins or cranberries, dried apples or figs. The nuts and fruit don't need refrigeration so you can stow a baggie in your drawer for a quick snack.
o High-fiber crackers with low sodium and high amounts of grain. There are so many healthy, nutritious crackers to choose from.
o Almond butter is better than peanut butter. High fiber, good fat and more nutritious than peanut butter. It's a great substitute for butter.

These are only a few suggestions for keeping on track through any weight loss program that you're on. We all know that the workplace is loaded with land mines in the fridge, near the water cooler, in the vending machine. Be smart and stay on track and bring your own nutritious snacks to work.

Employee weight loss programs are always a great idea to keep your employees healthy, and happy. Billings Farnsworth is a freelance writer.

Acai Fruits are Healthy

I am a nutritionist and I understand how people like to eat and what tantalizes their taste buds. I always say to my clients about taking proper meals at regular intervals of time. But who would listen until they face troubles and seek a doctor. That's how my business is going along. Anyways, my another effort to acknowledge all the readers how to take in proper diets without cutting on the unhealthy tasteful food. First most essential is to eat fruits daily. The fruits should include apple, banana, orange, apricot, acai berry, grapes, papaya, melon and mango. All these fruits have their nutrition essential for everyone at every age. A fruit salad of all these would make a complete breakfast meal. Or rather consuming their juices would fulfill the essential nutrients that are lost daily while having junk food or you may have a chance to skip them in any one meal.
