How to Make Beef Jerky in an Oven, Or Better Yet, a Food Dehydrator
Posted by Ramona at 1:08 AM Labels: Better, dehydrator 0 commentsCan you make jerky in a regular home oven? Yes, a home oven can be used as a makeshift food dehydrator. Food dehydration essentially requires two basic elements; heat and air flow. These two elements work in concert to remove moisture from food. As the heat warms the food, its moisture is released and evaporated into the air. To dehydrate food in an oven, you simply place food items on the wire racks in your oven, set the heat and leave the oven door slightly ajar to let air and moisture out. You can also place a fan by the open oven door to provide some air circulation.
The basic meat preparation steps for making jerky are as follows: o Choose a lean piece of meat and trim off all the fat, connective tissue and or tendons o Slice the trimmed meat into 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick strips. The slices can be made with or against the grain. o If desired, the meat strips can be marinated with sauces and seasoned with spices, salt and pepper. o The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recommends that, before dehydrating, the meat strips be heated to a temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit (71 degrees Celsius). The USDA recommends this step to destroy any harmful bacteria that may be in the raw meat. Per the USDA, studies have shown that harmful bacteria can survive temperatures of 140 degrees Fahrenheit (60 degrees Celsius). The USDA especially recommends preheating, before dehydrating, for ground beef based jerky. o Maintain a constant drying temperature of between 130 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit (54 to 60 degrees Celsius).
Dried Fruit
Advantages of dehydrating food in an oven include: a) an easy, practical way to experiment with food dehydration and b) little to no additional investment is required, assuming an oven is already available. However, dehydrating with an oven does have its disadvantages including: a) an oven lacks air movement, which is a critical component of food dehydration and could result in improperly dehydrated food, bacteria and microbial growth and premature food spoilage, b) inefficient energy use given the oven's size and cost (it is estimated that leaving the oven door open will require the oven to work 25% to 30% harder to maintain the desired oven temperature), c) the danger inherent in leaving the oven door open while it is in use, especially if you have younger children, d) the heat emanating from the open oven door will heat the surrounding area - not so good if it is spring or summer or if you live in a warmer climate, e) some older ovens cannot set temperatures below 200 degrees Fahrenheit (93 degrees Celsius) and f) your oven will obviously be out of commission for several hours.
Food dehydrators are specifically designed to provide a constant ideal drying temperature combined with heated air that circulates via a blower or fan. Thus, the two main components in food dehydration - heat and air - are controllable via the dehydration unit. A food dehydrator's advantages include: a) a more efficient usable unit and space, b) a temperature control that can precisely maintain a constant desired drying temperature, c) a fan that circulates the air, thus removing moisture and d) a more efficient dehydration processing time.

Dry Skin Treatment With Herbal and Ayurvedic Remedies
Posted by Ramona at 7:24 AM Labels: Ayurvedic, Herbal, Remedies, treatment 0 commentsDry skin is generally caused due to environmental conditions. It is observed in cold weather, when the climate is too dry and cool. Since the climate is dry, it absorbs the water content of the skin, due to which it becomes dry. In this sense, dry skin is caused by vata vitiation. But sometimes, the skin becomes dry in the hot season also. If this happens, then the cause is a pitta vitiation.
(1) Useful Herbs/Plants in the Treatment of Dry skin
1. Aloe vera (Aloe vera)
Aloe vera replenishes the skin by providing the nutrients it lacks. Its extracts are used for massaging the skin.
2. Apple (Malus domestica)
Apple contains potassium and tannin which are both necessary to maintain the healthy texture of the skin. Apple not only removes the dryness of the skin, but also makes it appear shinier.
3. Cucumber (Cucumis sativus)
Cucumber is beneficial if the dryness is especially over the face. The juices of the cucumber have a cooling effect on the face. Also the juices provide the lost water content to the face and reduce its dryness.
(2) Dietary Treatments for Dry skin
Since dry skin is caused due to vata or pitta vitiation, the diet should be designed to reduce these vitiations. Vata is the air element; while pitta is the fire element. The following guidelines must be followed:-
1. Cook your food in a little fat, suitably ghee. The food must not be totally dry.
2. If the dry skin is a result of vata vitiation (dry skin in cold weather), then eat foods that are heavy on the stomach. But do not use much spices.
3. If the dry skin is a result of pitta vitiation (dry skin in hot weather), then eat light foods that are easy to digest. Use more fibers in the diet.
4. Sweet foods are good for both vitiations.
5. Eat lots of fruits. Consume more of the sweet foods to build up the starch content in the skin.
6. The best condiments and spices to be used in the diet are cumin, coriander and turmeric. These soothe the skin.
7. Water is the most important part of the diet for correcting dry skin. About 7 to 8 glasses of water must be consumed in a day. But the water should be at room temperature. Cold water will aggravate the vata further.
8. Avoid alcohol and caffeine-containing beverages since they can make the skin drier.
(3) Home Medications
a. In order to reduce the dryness of the skin, massage therapy must be used. Any herbal oil will do for the massage. Almond, avocado and olive oils are the best. The whole skin must be massaged and fingers must be used to dig deeper so as to pass the oil into the skin. After the massage, you must wait for about half an hour (keep the massaged skin exposed to the air if possible) and then go for a bath. The period helps the oil to permeate into the skin.
b. If the dryness is on the face, then make a paste of about a teaspoonful of rose water and two of honey. Smear this paste nicely on the face. Let it remain for a couple of minutes and then wash it off with slightly warm water.
c. Mayonnaise gives good results when applied on the dry skin and let be for some time.
d. An apple can be used for treating excessive dryness of the skin. Cut an apple in half and run its fleshy part on the skin. Apply a bit of pressure and squeeze the apple onto the skin to let its juices flow in.
e. Do not use tap water for washing the face. Tap water contains chloride ions which may harm the dry skin. Use mineral water instead. In a similar manner, do not use an ordinary soap on the skin. There are soaps available with moisturizers. Use them when having your bath.
Maintain a proper daily regimen. Try to get up at a fixed time each morning and go to bed at a fixed time. The adage ‘Early to bed and early to rise makes a person healthy, wealth and wise’ is very true in the case of dry skin.
Regular exercise is also important. Exercise makes the blood circulate better, due to which the nutrients are transported to all parts of the body. This will make the skin moister.

Coffee Characteristics
Posted by Ramona at 1:07 AM Labels: Characteristics, Coffee 0 commentsThe Coffee bean is not really a bean. It's a fruit! And the coffee fruit (we'll call it a bean hereafter) is very delicate. Every factor you can think of can affect the flavor when you brew your cup of coffee. Below is a list of the major factors that you must consider when picking the best cup of coffee.
Species
Dried Fruit
There are 3 main varieties of beans that you must be aware of when choosing your perfect cup of coffee. Arabica, the oldest and original cultivated coffee plant is know for the best flavor. Robusta and Liberica are the other plants primarily used as commodity coffee found in most coffee blends.
Please visit our article on Coffee Plants & Botanical Classifications to learn more about these types of species.
Geography/Terrain/Location
Every country in the world produces a different flavor coffee with its own set of characteristics. Different soils produce different tasting coffee. Jamaican Blue Mountain with its rich volcanic soil produces some of the worlds most sought after coffee. Costa Rica also produces very high quality coffee but its beans are know for their high acidity and full body. All this comes from the numerous topographical and ecological factors. Coffee grown in higher elevations generally produce the worlds most sought after coffees.
Climate
Rainfall, sunlight, temperature, and other climate factors affect how coffee beans grow and taste. This can vary from how Cloudy skies and rich rain forest protect beans from harsh sunlight to seasonal factors affecting coffee plantings times and growth rate. Generally slower growing coffee plants and beans produce stronger, more flavorful coffees.
Farming
Farming techniques affect the growing cycle while also determine if the beans are going to develop to their potential. A number of farming techniques such as soil fertilization, watering, pruning, and plant care affect the quality of the coffee crop this year, and into the future. Coffee must be picked at its most ripeness to achieve the best coffee. Arabica plants, for example, are picked 3 times a year to ensure the ripest coffee crop. Lastly, coffee plants must be replanted after a few seasons to ensure the best crop.
Processing
Making coffee requires that seeds must remove from the trees. Fresh coffee looks like cherries and with skins removed divulge a green (not brown) bean. There are two main ways to process coffee: dry and wet. Dry processing is the traditional method practice by many of the worlds largest coffee regions. The dry process entails laying the beans on a flat surface - much like making dried fruit such as sun-dried tomatoes - causing the skin and fruit to brittle for easy removal. In this process the beans must be turned regularly to ensure even dryness and prevent over-cooking and scorching. Peeling of the bean must be done gently or you risk the bean lose a layer of protection resulting in staleness or mold. Dry Processing is done by hand and is the primary method used in developing countries.
Wet Processing results in the coffee cherries softening large containers of water. The seeds are then mechanically removed resulting in the peeled fruit sinking to the bottom with skins floating to the top for disposal. The seeds are next dried naturally or through an oven.
Both wet and dry processing affects the coffees flavor profile. Generally speaking, when you process beans with the traditional dry method, you are creating the purest coffee bean flavor. Dry processing creates a coffee with more body, depth, lowered acidity, and more earthy flavors.
Wet processing produces a bean with a brighter acidity and cleaner taste. While both dry and wet processing bring risk of mold growth, the introduction of water in the wet process noticeably higher probability.
Storage and Shipping
One of the most overlooked factors in coffee flavor is how it's stored and shipped. The coffee bean, like a fine wine, will pick up flavors from its containers. The coffee bean can pick up bad tasting flavors and odors if they are exposed to any during the storage and shipping phase. If you store the beans in a high humidity environment you risk the bean fermenting, rotting, or growing bacteria and mold. Traditionally coffee is shipped in breathable burlap sacks to do low costs. Long sea voyages in vessels not hermetically sealed can result in oft tasting coffee.
Roast
Roasts are how a bean is cooked as well as the length of heat exposure. Different roasts can result in identical beans tasting completely different.

Jujube Fruit Isn't Just For Movie Theaters Any More
Posted by Ramona at 1:00 AM Labels: Jujube, Theaters 0 commentsThe jujube fruit is a Chinese date. Jujubes are oval and about the size of an olive, containing a bright red flesh when they are fresh, but shrinking and shriveling and turning brown to an appearance similar to other dates when they are dried. Every jujube contains 1 or 2 seeds. Jujubes become sweeter as they are dried, and jujube date sugar is a key component of thousands of traditional Chinese and Japanese herbal medicines.
While complex herbal formulas use jujube sugar to "harmonize" other ingredients, the primary use of jujube dates in Asian kitchen medicine is to create calm, especially calm after night terrors. Porridges sweetened with jujube sugar are a standard remedy for toddlers who cry at night, so much so that an instant porridge known as Gan Mai Da Zao Tang is available from acupuncturists and at Chinese herb shops across the United States.
Dried Fruit
Laboratory experiments with animals have found that the sugar in jujube dates reduces electrical activity in the hippocampus, the part of the brain associated with overwhelming, primal urges. I can attest from personal experience that jujubes calm crying toddlers, long enough for uncle (or parents) to take a nap.
You can use jujubes whenever recipes call for raisins or dates. Jujubes grow and produce prolifically across the southern U.S. from Florida to California. If you pick jujubes from your own tree, just be sure to let them ripen first. Jujubes picked too early, that is, before the flesh inside the date begins to turn yellow and take on the texture and flavor of a crisp apple, do not ripen to their red, sugary, soft desirable state.
The dates are especially high in vitamin C and keep indefinitely without sulfites or other preservatives when dried. If you do not grow your own jujubes or have access to a farmer's market where jujubes are sold, jujube fruit in available in most Chinese, Vietnamese, and Indian food shops. And to make the traditional remedy for night terrors, try this:
Lullaby Soup
This porridge originates from the oldest of all written cookbooks, a medical guide entitled Essentials from the Golden Cabinet, written in China in the early third century CE. The venerable medical sage Zhang Zhongjing described an elaborate theory of how this simple soup is suitable for calming children and soothing sore throats in adults, explaining that anxiety, excessive worry, or pensiveness disrupted the flow of energy throughout the body and the jujubes and rice recaptured the "lost soul" disabled by emotional distress. Traditional Chinese Medicine regards the recipe as so useful it is even available as an instant soup in China today. You can make this porridge into a vegetarian dinner entrée by adding 1/2 cup of almonds or pine nuts, reserving a few almonds or pine nuts for garnish for adult diners.
1 cup jujube dates
1 licorice stick
1 cup rice
4 cups water
1. Place the rice in a bowl, cover with water, and allow to stand for at least 1 hour.
2. Rinse the jujubes, then remove seeds and discard the licorice stick. Cut the dates into small pieces.
3. Drain the rice, then put rice and jujubes plus 1 cup of water into a blender, pulsing several times. (If you are using almonds or pine nuts, add them at this step.) Add 2 more cups of water and continuing pulsing until you have an even mixture.
4. Pour the mixture into a saucepan and bring to a boil. Then reduce heat, stirring frequently, until mixture has the consistency of ketchup.
5. Serve hot. A sprinkle of cinnamon or a few raisins or pitted jujube dates add color and flavor.

Organic Dried Cherries
Posted by Ramona at 12:58 AM Labels: Cherries, Organic 0 commentsWith all the unhealthy food options available to us today, it is important to be conscious of the things we eat; health care is not cheap, and there is no cheaper health insurance policy than a healthy diet and regular exercise.
But with all the unhealthy foods available to us at every turn it is important to realize that temptation will always be something you have to deal with. You will always feel the urge to snack on something occasionally.
Dried Fruit
Because of the certainty of this urge, it is a good idea to plan for it by keeping a stock of delicious snacks around the house that are not heavy in fat, sodium, cholesterol, or high fructose corn syrup.
Fruits make excellent healthy snacks, and, because of cherries health benefits, this fruit is a favorite of many. Cherries are high in vitamin C and potassium; they contain antioxidants called anthocyanins, which studies have attributed anti-inflammatory properties to; they contain melatonin, which can be used as a sleep aid; and they are high in fiber with little or no fat and no cholesterol, making them good for your heart.
Even though cherries are not in season for very long compared to most fruits, organic dried cherries allow you to take advantage of cherries health benefits at any time of the year for a reasonable price, especially if you are buying in bulk.
Buying organic dried cherries in bulk may sound a bit overwhelming, but there are more uses for them than simply snacking. Incorporating dried cherries into your cooking is a great way to put a new spin on an old recipe. There are two ways to incorporate them: powdering them, and re-hydrating them. The former is best for milkshakes or smoothies, while the latter works best for things like breads and gelatin desserts.
When re-hydrating organic dried cherries it is faster to boil them. However, it is generally recommended that instead you soak them for longer in water at room temperature to avoid losing most of the nutrition in the cherries.
An important thing to keep in mind when you are shopping for organic dried cherries is that there are many different types of cherries, ranging from sweet to bitter. Rainier, Bing, and Lambert are a few of the sweeter types, while Morello and Montmorency are more bitter.
Also remember to keep in mind that each type of cherry will provide you with a different range of nutrients and antioxidants. It is important, especially if you are buying cherries for a specific health-related property, that you make sure the kind of cherries you buy are known for that specific property.
And remember that no two cherry-growers use exactly the same methods, so comparing Bings to Bings does not always guarantee equal quality. Try to read product reviews if you can.

The accumulated knowledge of centuries of ancient Asian medicine has been passed down from generation to generation and also to early European explorers and settlers. It is no wonder that recent modern scientific research seeks to verify the traditional claims of the beneficial properties of the fruit and rind when research already indicates properties in the fruit that can inhibit several types of cancer including breast cancer, liver cancer and leukemia.
Mangosteen also has anti-histamine and anti-inflammatory properties. The whole fruit has been used traditionally, as a medicinal treatment for diarrhoea, skin infection and wounds throughout South East Asia.
One of the most powerful antioxidants in nature, called xanthone, is found in the Mangosteen pericarp and also in the whole fruit. Xanthones are recognized for their medicinal potential, and proven benefit in certain diseases as well as providing a general health benefit, particularly on the cardiovascular system. They are also naturally antibiotic, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory. Mangosteen has an inhibitory action against the bacterial organisms such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Staphylococcus aureus. It has also gained a reputation for effective strengthening the immune system.
Its cultivation outside S.E. Asia generally has little success because of the trees' need of heat and water. In spite of that, many people have tried to plant Mangosteen in other places, such as California, Florida, North Queensland with a degree of success. Mature trees of about 10 years of age begin to yield from 500-1500 fruits. Fruit quality is destroyed with refrigeration and this presents problems with marketing and transport.
The Mangosteen fruit consist of 3 major parts.
The Pericarp - is the rind or peel and contains the highest level of xanthones.
The fruit pulp - is considered as one of the tastiest fruits in the world - commercially offered as a juice
The seeds - found within the white pulp
The other known species of the genus also produce fruits that may have potentially similar properties but scientific tests have so far focused upon the popular "Queen of Fruits" or Purple Mangosteen to which the above information relates. Although other species offer fruits that are reported as edible, none deserve as much attention and appreciation as the one that is popularly known as the Mangosteen.
Other species however, may promise further rewards for those who persist in seeking to demonstrate the validity of traditional therapeutic claims such as the recent findings of the Purple Mangosteen in successful treatment of a wide range of difficult conditions such as autism and neurological diseases. Others offer avenues for possible discovery of other interesting properties-
1. gibbsiae Mountain Mangosteen of Australia from Atherton region is a tree with simple leaves and twigs that exude yellow latex. The fruits are to 60 mm with green flesh and are not edible. They contain clearly segmented 8 or 9 cells each containing a single seed has yellow waxy perfumed flowers and purple berries. It is attracting some attention by plant researchers.
2. hanburyii Gutta gamba, Gamboge from Thailand and Sri Lanka provides the official Gamboge, a bright yellow pigment esteemed by artists because it imparted a wonderful orange colour to their paintings. Also used as dye for yellow robes of Buddhist priests. Still mentioned in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia for use in dropsical conditions and to lower blood pressure where there is cerebral congestion but now greater caution is advised. It has a reputation as a drastic and sometimes dangerous cathartic.
3. indica Goa Butter, Kokam butters, produce an edible oil from seeds. The dried fruit rind is used in curries.
4. intermedia Lemon Drop Mangosteen has pleasant melting flesh and wrinkled skin. All species of mangosteen rind is used as a spice.
5. mestonii Native Mangosteen, Meston's Mangosteen from Queensland rainforests growing to 15m. Flowers are pink in terminal clusters. Large reddish purple large, edible fruits to 7 cm. It is related but cannot compare to the exotic mangosteen. It has not been developed in cultivation.
6. sessilis has an ornamental deep pink/red flower is adopted as the national flower of Tonga.
7. subellipticad Fukugi from Japan is held as the floral symbol of Mobuto and Tarama on Okinawa.
8. tinctoria - related to the mangosteen - and is reported to have a delicious fruit.
9. warrenii Native Mangosteen White, beautifully fragrant flowers followed by round purple fruit with sweet orange/brown edible flesh. Slow growing to 13m. It has been recommended for cultivation. Branches and leaves when bruised exude yellow latex. It is a large fruit to 60 mm occurring singly or in clusters and contains either 2-3 seeds. Found from Babinda to Cape York.
Most species in Garcinia are known for their resins or yellowish gums used as purgatives but recent research claims to have found hydroxycitric acid in the rind. Although toxic it suggests an appetite suppressant could be developed as medication in over indulged wealthy countries. There is considerable interest in the successful results of the whole fruit juice in treatment of autism and many other symptoms so evident now in our chemically toxic environment.

Fruits to be Eaten During Summer
Posted by Ramona at 6:10 AM Labels: During, fruits, summer 0 commentsRaspberries - Good source of vitamin C, vitamin A and fiber, raspberries are the most fragile of all the berries. So they have to be plucked gently. Buy firm dry raspberries avoiding soft ones. They are high perishable and should be refrigerated if not eaten immediately. Gently rinse the raspberries under cold running water and dry them on paper towels before serving.
Watermelons - Mostly water so they are low in calories. Excellent source of vitamin C, potassium and high in pectin. To know whether if the fruit is sweet, thump it with the knuckles and if you hear a hollow sound, then the fruit is going to taste sweet. Watermelon has dark green skin and bright red coloured flesh. Uncut fruit should be stored in a cool place, while cut watermelon should always be tightly wrapped, refrigerated and used within a day or so.
Cherries - Dark cherries = high in nutritional value. Packed with enzymes, vitamins and minerals. Buy heavy firm cherries with bright colour and fresh stem. They last for two days or so. Chilling not only preserves them, but also makes them more flavorful. Simply rinse cherries in cool water and drain on paper towel until they are ready to be eaten.
Pineapples - Storehouse of minerals, potassium, sodium, phosphorus, magnesium, sulfur, calcium and iron. They have loads of vitamin C and are an excellent source of bromelain, an enzyme that helps digestion. The best fruit to be eaten is the one with strong sweet aroma. The colour of the fruit skin should be dark golden colour; leaves should be fresh and green with no brown or yellow tips. They ripen at room temperature. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate it.
Peaches - They are a rich source of beta-carotene and potassium and contain moderate amounts of vitamin C. Buy bright coloured, firm peach with smooth skin and sweet aroma. They can ripen at room temperature. It is ideal to refrigerate the ripe ones and eat it within 5 days.

How To Prepare Great Camping Food
Posted by Ramona at 12:47 AM Labels: Camping, Prepare 0 commentsAfter a hard day of hiking in the woods, everyone is looking forward to some good camping food. It can be demoralizing when camping food is bland freeze-dried dinners and trail mix. The good news is that tasty camping food can be prepared in advance and can be light weight too.
Good camping food requires the right tools. You'll need a good camp stove, a set of cookware, and probably plenty of water. And you'll also need food. Since camping usually means some amount of hiking, the food you pack will have to be light. Any meat that isn't dehydrated tends to be extremely heavy, making most campers vegetarians whether they like it or not. Especially if you're out for more than a couple days, protein gets to be an issue if your diet doesn't contain any meat. Nuts and beans provide the easiest and lightest sources, with peanut butter often filling in a needed kick of protein at lunch or breakfast.
Dried Fruit
Though dinner usually takes up the most time and energy, breakfast and lunch are important meals while camping. Breakfast can easily be a cold meal, though it's often worth breaking out the stove for hot tea or coffee with your dried fruit or granola bar. Pita bread or tortillas make handy bases for lunch, as they allows for sandwiches and dips but still pack easily; they're light but don't crush like regular bread. Trail mix is a stand-by favorite, as is dried fruit as they provide quick energy while on the move.
Finally, once you make it to camp you want a big dinner; something hearty and hot. Instant polenta or couscous, though a bit heavy, provides an excellent base for cheeses, dried vegetables, or other sauces, as both are hot and filling. Dried beans and barley make for hearty camping food, though be sure to find those which don't require much soaking or you'll be eating your beans for breakfast the next day. Black beans and rice make an excellent meal, especially if you can find a ready-made store mix which often packs its own kick. It's helpful to have a stove that can easily simmer food when putting together a camp meal; stoves like MSR's Whisperlight are notorious for having two settings: off and hi. Boiling water is easy, but simmering rice or beans for ten minutes can become a battle between keeping the stove lit and preventing your food from burning. However, it can be done.
Salt, pepper, dried basil, and some garlic powder can really spice up your camping food. Remember to bring a small spice collection for your camping trip. You can get some small containers from most outdoor retailers. With some advance preparation, you do not have to eat those freeze-dried astronaut meals

Fruit Baskets - Great Versatile Homemade Gifts for Everyone
Posted by Ramona at 6:06 AM Labels: Baskets, Everyone, Homemade, Versatile 0 commentsIf you've never made a gift basket, a fruit basket is a good place to start. You can't make a mistake when choosing items to include in your basket. When designing other theme gift baskets, the colors and sizes of gifts can be confusing. However, all fruits look wonderful together.
Start by selecting a white or natural colored wicker basket. A basket with handles are easier to carry if you are traveling a distance. Place straw or shredded brown paper in the empty basket before arranging the fruit and other items you have chosen.
In addition to fresh fruit, there are many other fruit related items you can add to give your basket more variety. I particularly like to scatter unshelled mixed nuts in with the fruit. Some other fruit related items that are readily available are dried fruits, fruit flavored tea, jams, jellies, fruit salsa, fruit vinegar, candied pineapple, apple crisps, and fruit flavored candy. A small box of chocolate covered cherries or fruit filled cookies are also nice additions.
The best fruits to include are bright red or green apples, oranges or tangerines, and pears that are not yet ripe. Bananas look really nice, but choose the ones that are not quite ripe. My favorite fruits to use for a decorative touch are grapes. At the last minute, scatter a few small bunches of both red and green grapes amongst the other fruits.
Another decorative touch is to place a terry or tea towel with a fruit theme under the fruit. A fruit scented candle is a wonderful gift item to finish off your beautiful gift basket.

Fruit Benefits For a Healthier Life
Posted by Ramona at 12:45 AM Labels: Benefits, Healthier 0 commentsIn order to stay healthy the body requires a variety of foods. One of the most important, yet least utilized, is fruit for its large number of natural vitamins, minerals, and photo-chemicals that not only keep the body healthy, but also repair damage caused by exposure to the elements and the aging process. Fruit benefits have also be shown to accelerate weight loss.
Most diets require supplements due to the fact that when nutrition is decreased the body will seek ways to compensate. However, fruit goes a long way to not only providing needed natural enrichment, but also enhances fiber content and density of energy from other foods eaten. Best of all it provides an alternative food sources to diets. It is also low in sodium which is known to cause water weight gain.
Dried Fruit
For any dieter, one-third of foods eaten should be in the form of fruits and vegetables. These fill the stomach faster reducing consumption of foods that are higher in calories. For many utilizing this concept, they will find that a rapid weight loss will occur initially. This helps one control weight effectively while achieving the maximum health benefits fruits provide.
Fruits provide many other benefits even for those who are not dieting. They will find they have more energy, a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, lower risk of developing cancer, lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, and lower risk of developing type-two diabetes. It can even slow the aging process for many.
To maximize potential benefits, five pieces of fruit should be added to daily diets; however, these do not have to be full pieces and they can be used in creative ways. For example, to sit and eat a whole cantaloupe is not only difficult, but not necessarily beneficial. By adding fruit to cereal in the morning, to eat an apple during snack time, or to drink fruit juices, however, will maximize benefits.
There are a few tips for adding fruit into a diet that are easily accomplished and minimizes the need to think about how to add these supplements throughout the day. For those who opt for a light workout, eat a few small pieces before and after exercise. When watching television instead of having a bowl of candy or chips nearby, keep a bowl of dried fruit. When the munchies strike they are readily available and do not require special treatment. Ultimately, fruit benefits will pay off in a healthier body.
Fruit Benefits For a Healthier Life
Getting the right types of fruits benefits in your diet important. You can rely on the benefits of fruit to help you make better dietary choices. For more great information on common sense health, visit CommonSenseHealth.com or click on one of the links.

Alkaline Fruits - Eat More, Live Longer!
Posted by Ramona at 12:39 AM Labels: Alkaline, fruits, Longer 0 commentsEating alkaline fruits is one of the essential steps in the alkaline diet system. This isn't a difficult step at all as many people are fond of eating fruits. Fresh fruits are not only delicious they're also packed with nutrients that can only be good for the body.
There is an abundant variety of fruits and vegetables in our natural environment so even if some fruits are not that appetizing to your palette, you can still find many choices that will surely satisfy your taste buds. Each kind of fruit contains different components that can make us healthy.
Dried Fruit
More importantly, lots of fruit varieties are rich in alkaline content. Our bodies contain both alkaline and acid substances but in order to be healthy, we need to keep our pH or alkaline vs acid ration at just the right level. A balanced pH is the key to being strong and resilient against diseases. Thus, when we eat more alkaline-rich foods, we are neutralizing our body's pH balance.
You may be wondering, what particular fruits are high in alkaline content? Dried figs and raisins are known to be wonderful alkaline sources. Other popular alkaline fruits are grapes, apples, pears, papaya, banana, pineapple, avocado, mangoes, watermelon, peach, honey dew, coconuts, and other tropical fruits.
Citrus fruits such as cherries, strawberries, oranges, limes and lemons are also rich alkaline-source although many people would consider them to be "acidic". Yes, citric fruits contain vitamin C but it is the type of acid which has an alkalinizing effect to the body. These citrus fruit varieties do not leave acid-ash or acid residue in our system. In fact, they leave alkaline-ash or alkaline residue in our system.
The great thing about practicing the alkaline-acid diet program is that you don't need to spend so much just to be healthy. You won't be required to buy expensive pills or exercise equipment. Alkaline-rich fruits are so easy to find in the market and they're not at all expensive. Some of these can even be picked from your garden so achieving good health shouldn't be an impossible feat. Along with correct eating, practice a daily exercise routine and avoid bad habits like smoking and drinking.

What The Heck Is Happening With The Hookah Tobacco
Posted by Ramona at 5:48 AM Labels: Happening, Hookah, Tobacco 0 commentsLater, hookah tobacco was also mixed with fruit extracts, and in the 1980s tobacconists began experimenting with various flavors, so that now a virtual smorgasbord of highly aromatic hookah tobacco is widely available. Though a few smokers opt to stick to the strong Turkish tobacco, many people always go for those flavored tobaccos, also called Shisha. The mixtures of flavored tobaccos are actually derived from some f the following items: watermelon, jasmine, honey, apple-mint, cherry, and apricot.
The price for each special pack generally range from $4 to $17 while assorted packs is priced at around $30. The price in most lounges for a bowl of hookah tobacco ranges from $4 to $9 for slower burning leaf or custom blends. As hookah tobacco has high moisture content, it is smoke using hookah charcoal.
Instead of being directly lit, hookah tobacco is heated with a coal placed wire mesh to dry the moisture.
Each bowl of this wet tobacco lasts a long time, usually requiring several replenishments of the charcoal. This drying process was also observed by ancient hookah smokers.
Normally, hookah products are composed mainly of 70 percent fruit flavored molasses and the drying methods used to damp the product. Most hookah do not contain any tar at all with just a little bit of nicotine.
The carcinogenic tendency of hookah is addressed by the fact that it does not employ any direct lighting. Researches revealed bigger chances of people who smoke hookah to contract smoking problems.
Although considered as ultra light and mild, hookah tobacco still poses heart risk among people.
If you really don't know me by now, I'm Jay and I really prefer shisha tobacco because it is excellent. Check out some the day after tomorrow.

Freeze Dried Maqui Berry - Discover the Wonders of This New Superberry
Posted by Ramona at 12:38 AM Labels: Discover, Freeze, Superberry, Wonders 1 commentsThe freeze dried Maqui berry pulp is a very rich and natural source of antioxidants. This wonder berry is starting the change the way people look at losing weight and boosting their health. The Maqui fruit is found to be growing in the central and Patagonian Region of Argentina and Southern Chile. The ones who first harnessed and realized the value of the Maqui berries were the Mapuche Indians of Chile. They discovered this fruit several centuries ago. The berries are known to have properties which could help the body maintain its health by strengthening the body's immune system. This wonderful berry can also be the treatment for different kinds of illnesses and diseases like sore throat, diarrhea, ulcers, tumors, diabetes and ulcers.
The Maqui superberry is actually a tiny, rich purple berry and is the world's only berry that has the most antioxidants. A study conducted by Brunswick laboratories has proven that the Maqui berry indeed has the highest amount of antioxidants. Another amazing thing about the antioxidants of this fruit is that it contains an added molecule of oxygen which is twice as potent in removing and eliminating the free radicals in the human body. Because of this, the body cells will not be damaged or destroyed by the free radicals.
Dried Fruit
In past years, it was the Acai berry which held the attention of the world. It used to be the berry which contained the highest level of antioxidants and it used to be the berry which could provide numerous health benefits. Now that Maqui berry is out in the market, it looks like the Acai berry has to take a step back and hand the spotlight to this new superberry. In fact, if you measure the amount of antioxidants per pound of each berry, the Maqui is a better source than the Acai berry. According to the ORAC or the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity test, the Maqui berry contains 27,600 value for every 100 gram serving of freeze dried Maqui berry powder. In comparison, the Acai berry has 16,700 per 100 gram serving. Its value is certainly below that of the Maqui's level. Because of this fact, it is also a better source of nutrients than the Acai berry.
A great thing about Maqui berry is that it is a natural product and because of this, there are no adverse side effects reported when using or taking the supplements. There are plenty of products which aim to improve the health and wellness of a person. These products are full of unnecessary chemicals and are synthetically made and are more harmful to your health than beneficial.
This is where you have to be careful. Because of the booming popularity of the Maqui berry, there are many people who would take advantage of this demand. It is best to buy products which are made by and distributed by companies that are reputable. Otherwise, don't even take a second look at the product.
Freeze Dried Maqui Berry - Discover the Wonders of This New Superberry
Companies which have the license and certification to distribute Maqui products have the best kinds of freeze dried Maqui berry powder. I suggest you should visit http://www.maquiberrysuperberry.com to discover more.

Fruits and Vegetables - Heart Protective
Posted by Ramona at 12:37 AM Labels: fruits, Protective, vegetables 0 comments"Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food." Hippocrates
Higher consumption of fruits and vegetables has been associated with improved cardiovascular outcomes. In one clinical trial, published in the June 19, 2001, edition of the Annals of Internal Medicine, subjects in the highest quintile of fruit and vegetable consumption had a 20% reduction in relative risk of coronary heart disease as compared with the quintile with the lowest intake. Most of this benefit was related to green leafy vegetables and vitamin C-rich fruits and vegetables.
Dried Fruit
Data from two major studies, the Nurses' Health study with 71,910 enrolled women (1984) and the Health Professionals' Follow-up Study with 37,725 enrolled men (1986) was published in the Nov. 3, 2004 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. At baseline, all participants were free of major chronic disease. In both studies, fruit and vegetable intake was inversely associated with the development of major chronic diseases and cardiovascular disease. The reduction in cardiovascular disease was also noted in smokers.
Results of the Life Span Study, an ongoing study of 40,349 persons exposed and not exposed to radiation from Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings was published in the October 2003 issue of Stroke. Daily consumption of green or yellow vegetables and fruits ( irrespective of other factors in both groups ) was associated with a protective effect for total stroke, and cerebral infarction mortality in both men and women. Risk reduction for bleeding inside the brain, called intracerebral hemorrhage, was 32% in men and 30% in women
"For optimum health, scientists say, eat a rainbow of colors. Your plate should look like a box of Crayolas." Janice M. Horowitz, TIME, January 12, 2002. Colored fruits and vegetables are loaded with antioxidants. Blue/purple fruits and vegetables like blueberries, purple grapes, beetroot, eggplant and plums contain health-promoting phytochemicals such as anthocyanins and phenolics. Green vegetables like green grapes, broccoli, green peppers, spinach, green cabbage, peas and green beans contain phytochemicals such as lutein and indoles. White, tan, and brown fruits and vegetables such as bananas, cauliflower, garlic, onions, mushrooms and potatoes contain varying amounts of phytochemicals including allicin and selenium. Yellow and orange fruits and vegetables such as mangoes, papaya, lemon, carrots, pumpkin, apricots, sweet corn and yellow squash contain antioxidants such as vitamin C as well as carotenoids and bioflavonoids. Red fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes, cherries, pomegranates, raspberries, strawberries, watermelon, radishes and beets contain health promoting lycopene and anthocyanins. Besides antioxidant activity, fruits and vegetables also help lower blood pressure and provide fiber. Soluble fiber in fruits and vegetables helps block the absorption of cholesterol from food.
"I drink 6 or seven glasses of water a day. I also drink vegetable juice. And I have at least 5 or 6 pieces of fresh fruit everyday and 10 raw vegetables." Fitness Guru Jack LaLanne. The US Food Guide Pyramid recommends three to five servings of vegetables and two to four servings of fruit per day. A vegetable serving is any one of the following: 1/2 cup chopped raw, non-leafy vegetables, 1 cup of leafy, raw vegetables, 1/2 cup cooked vegetables. 1/2 cup cooked beans, peas, or lentils, 1 small baked potato or 3/4 cup vegetable juice. A fruit serving is any one of the following: 1 medium raw fruit, 1/2 grapefruit, mango, or papaya, 3/4 cup juice, 1/2 cup berries or cut-up fruit, 1/2 cup canned, frozen, or cooked fruit or 1/4 cup dried fruit.
Eating fruits and vegetables are associated with other benefits too. Good intake has been shown guard against cataract and macular degeneration, two common causes of vision loss and afflicting millions of Americans over age sixty-five. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables may also have a cancer-preventive effect. Consumption has been associated with a reduced rate of cancers of the mouth and pharynx, esophagus, stomach, colon-rectum, larynx, lung, ovary , bladder, and kidney. It is estimated that one third of all cancer deaths in the United States could be avoided through appropriate dietary modification. Besides soluble fiber, fruits and vegetables also contain indigestible fiber. This sops up water like a sponge and expands when it passes through the digestive tract. This helps regulate bowel movements and can relieve or prevent constipation. Insoluble fiber also may help prevent diverticulosis and diverticulitis. Recent data suggests that fruits and vegetables can also fight the functional decline with aging and delay the onset of Alzhiemer's disease.
" I did enough research to realize that the healthiest way to live (and lose weight) is to eat a whole-foods diet of mostly vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes and whole grains; to avoid dairy, meat and sugar; and to cut back on processed foods " Actress Marilu Henner. Vegetables and fruits are best eaten fresh, preferably grown organically in your own garden. The next best choice is frozen produce. Modern freezing methods preserve the healthy nutrients, so frozen fruit and vegetables can be better than fresh produce that has been left out at room temperature for a long time. Cooking is necessary for some vegetables, as it weakens the cell wall, increasing the bioavailability. Avoid overcooking, as it may destroy vitamins and minerals. Microwaving, steaming or stir-frying in just a little polyunsaturated or monounsaturated oil, like olive or canola, is a healthier choice. The risk from pesticides can be reduced by washing the produce before consumption. This will also remove most of the micro-organisms that cause food poisoning.
"By eating fruits and vegetables from each color group, you will benefit from the unique array of phytochemicals, as well as essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber that each color group has to offer." Dr. Lorelei DiSogra, National Cancer Institute. Because each different fruit and vegetable group contains different phytochemicals, one color fruit group is not enough. You get the best health protection by eating regularly from each color group. Just add a different fruit and/or vegetable to all meals and snacks and you will be able to meet your daily requirements. Phytochemicals in whole foods such as fruits and vegetables appear to have additive and synergistic effects, leading to cardiovascular protection. This benefit unfortunately does not appear to work with pills or extracts.

Think Dried Fruits Are Good For You? Think Again - Sulfites Might Be Hurting You and Your Children
Posted by Ramona at 12:28 AM Labels: children, fruits, Hurting, Sulfites 0 commentsYou think you are being healthy by eating dried fruit, right? Guess again. Sulfites can be very dangerous.
What are sulfites? A lot of dried fruit contains a "sulfer-based preservative"... which if sensitive to sulfite, can do a lot of damage to ones body. Some people may not get a reaction until they have reached their forties or fifties. In other words, it can happen at any time during ones life.
Dried Fruit
The reactions one can get due to sulfite sensitivity include: skin problems, gastrointestinal disturbances, cardiovascular difficulties and pulmonary problems and fatigue. Sulfur preservatives initially were used by the ancient Greeks and Egyptians to preserve wine. Back then, they considered them safe. However, over the years, many people have gotten reactions to them.
Here are some other innocent sounding foods that the FDA claims may have sulfides in them... vegetable juice... trail mixes... canned, bottled or frozen fruit juices... instant mashed potatoes... dried soup mixes... maple syrup.. shredded coconut... salad dressing mixes... wine vinegar... flour tortillas... fresh or frozen shrimp... gelatin... cornstarch... sauerkraut... bottled lemon juice... to name just some. The good news is that in 1986, the FDA banned use of sulfites on fresh fruits and vegetables. If you want to know if you might be allergic to sulfites, one way to find out is to eat one of the foods listed above (or drink) (obviously, don't eat or drink too much), as noted by the product label, and see if within an hour, you start coughing get headaches, become tired, start itching, or see any redness of your skin.
So make sure you check your labels on your food and drinks. Make sure they do not contain "sulfites".

Natural Facial Masks for Dry Skin
Posted by Ramona at 5:36 AM Labels: Facial, Natural 0 commentsDry skin can benefit a lot from periodical use of hydrating masks. They have many moisturizing ingredients that help the skin to have more balance. They may have plant extract, essential oils, and nourishing vegetable oils or milk derivates.
To make classic facial mask at home for dry skin, take 1/2 avocado and 1/4 cup of honey. Mash together these 2 ingredients for an easy face mask. Apply to your face and leave for 5 minutes before removing with a washcloth and some trepid water. You will definitely enjoy the smell and feeling of this mask on your face. Honey and avocado are particularly rich in moisturizing properties.
Generally benefits of avocado are numerous: it is filled with monounsaturated fats, Vitamin B and E, nutrients excellent for moisturizing and rejuvenating dry or tired skin. Use this fruit in the next masks too.
First recipe: take 1 avocado and 3-4 drops of almond oil. Peel and mash avocado and add almond oil until the mass is consistent. Apply to face while massaging it gently. Let it rest for 30 minutes and rinse off with warm water.
Second recipe: you need 1 avocado, 1 teaspoon of apple vinegar, 1 egg white, 3 teaspoons of olive oil. Peel and mash avocado and start adding the rest of the ingredients. Egg white should be beaten before you put it in. When the mass is done, apply to face and wash off after 20 minutes or so. This mask provides great moisture for skin, making it soft and elastic.
To prevent wrinkles, make a paste of bananas, yogurt and honey and apply it on the skin for 15-20 minutes then clean it with warm water. You’ll need 1/4 cup plain yogurt, 2 tablespoons honey and 1 banana.
Refreshing tomato mask. You need 1/4 peeled and seedless tomato. Chop it. 3 teaspoons of yogurt, 1 teaspoon peeled and then grated cucumber, 1 teaspoon of aloe vera gel, 3 teaspoons of oatmeal (finely ground). Additional ingredients are 2 mint leaves, fresh and crushed so the essential oils run out of the leaves. Mix all the ingredients in a large bowl. Apply on the face and leave on for about 10 minutes. Wash off with lukewarm water.
Popular milk mask for face. Take 1 teaspoon powdered milk, 1 tablespoon runny honey, 1 teaspoon aloe vera gel and 2 drops essential oil and mix ingredients well. Apply to face, let sit for 15 minutes, wash off with warm water. If you want to find facial masks recipes for another types of skin, please, go to http://www.beautifulskinblog.com.

Chaste Tree - Benefits and Uses of Chaste Tree
Posted by Ramona at 12:27 AM Labels: Benefits, Chaste 0 commentsChaste tree is derived from the dried, ripened fruit of Vitex agnuscastus. It contains the two iridoid glycosides, agnuside and aucubin, as well as flavonoids, essential oils, and progestins. The berries exert a progesterogenic effect on women and an antiandrogenic effect on men. Progestin components include progesterone, testosterone, and androstenedione. Chaste tree is believed to act directly on the hypothalamic-pituitary axis. The herb is also contained in various multivitamin supplements for women and in combination products used to alleviate menopausal symptoms. By increasing the release of luteinizing hormone, which in turn increases progesterone production in the ovaries, chaste tree helps to regulate the menstrual cycle.
A component in chaste tree has been shown to bind to dopamine receptors, thereby inhibiting the release of prolactin. This is particularly useful in treating premenstrual breast pain associated with excess secretion of prolactin. It may also act as a diuretic to reduce water retention before menstruation. Chaste tree is available as capsules, elixir, liquid extract, tablets, tea, and tinctures, in products such as Vitex, Vitex Alfalfa Supreme, Vitex Extract, Vitex 40 Plus, and Vitex Vegicaps.
