A Quick Guide to Pantry Pests

Pantry pests like to eat the same foods that humans do, and finding an infestation of pests in items such as cereals, flour, grains, baking mixes, crackers, pasta, dried fruit, spices and other dry goods is not uncommon. Often several different stages of the pests' life cycles may be present in the infestation, with adults, eggs and larvae present. The first indication of an infestation is typically the appearance of small moths in the kitchen, or the presence of beetles or larvae in dry foods.

Meal Moth

The Indian meal moth is the most common food pest that is found in the home. Meal moth larvae feed on dry goods such as cereals, flours, rice, dried fruit and vegetables, and candies and chocolate. An infestation with meal moth larvae is characterized by the appearance of silken threads that are left behind by the larvae as they eat and move through food supplies. The adult moth is small, with reddish-brown wings and a whitish-grey body.

Warehouse Beetle

The warehouse beetle feeds on cereal, cocoa, flours, nuts, dried starchy vegetables, spices, candy, and pet foods. Adult beetles are approximately one eighth of an inch long, with a dark brown oval body. Larvae are around one quarter inch long, with stiff hairs on the abdomen. Ingestion of these hairs can cause irritation to the mouth and digestive tract.

Merchant Grain Beetle and Saw-toothed Grain Beetle

Both of these beetles are around one tenth of an inch long, with tiny projections that resemble saw teeth on their thoraxes. In both the adult and larval stages, these beetles feed on grains, flours and meals, as well as cereals, nuts and dried fruit.

Red Flour Beetle and Confused Flour Beetle

In the adult stages both of these beetles are around one seventh of an inch long, with shiny reddish-brown oval bodies. They feed on cereals, grains, flours, dried fruits, herbs, and nut meats.

Drugstore Beetle and Cigarette Beetle

These species are both one eighth of an inch long in the adult stage, with light brown bodies. The cigarette beetle is more common than the drugstore beetle.

The cigarette beetle preferentially feeds on cigarettes, cigars and tobacco, but will also feed on spices and dried herbs, nuts, cereals, fruits and seeds. The drugstore beetle feeds on a very wide variety of foods, but is most commonly found in cereals, pet foods and drugs.

Weevils

Granary, rice and bean weevils are not commonly found in the home; these species tend to be found more often in warehouses and granaries. However, if infested food is brought into the home they may infest other food products. Weevils tend to be slightly larger than beetles, and have long protruding snouts. Granary and rice weevils feed most often on whole grains, while bean weevils feed on legumes such as beans and peas.

Treating and Preventing Infestations

The damage done by pantry pests is caused via contamination with pest by-products such as excrement, webbing, and hairs. Food that is contaminated should never be eaten.

Pantry pests thrive in our homes because we supply them with both food and warmth. The key to preventing infestations of pantry pests is preventing access to their food sources. However, completely eliminating an infestation may take several months, because some pests are able to survive extended periods without food.

The first step in eliminating an infestation is locating its source. If you notice moths or beetles in the kitchen, locate the source or sources and remove them from your kitchen immediately. If the infestation is small-limited to one or two food packages-controlling it is usually as simple as sealing and discarding the packages.

However, if you have several sources of infestation, control may be more difficult. All packages of dry food, including unopened ones, should be inspected carefully for the presence of larvae or adult beetles. Any packages with signs of infestation such as tiny holes or the presence of webbing should be discarded.

If the infestation is fairly widespread, it is best to remove all packages and scrub kitchen shelves with soap and water, paying special attention to cracks and crevices to remove all larvae and unhatched eggs.

Finally, practice good hygiene in the kitchen to prevent reinfestation.

Seal all dry foods in airtight containers with well-fitting lids, such as screw-top jars or plastic containers with tight lids

Clean shelves and other surfaces regularly

Purchase foods in smaller packages (rather than in large bulk packages) if they are foods you do not use regularly

Do not mix old and new supplies of foods

Wash containers before restocking with new supplies

Do not buy any foods contained in damaged packages

Keep shelves dry to discourage pests

Quick and Easy Recipe Ideas Using Cream Cheese

If you're a cream cheese lover then you'll want to know how to incorporate it into every meal and snack of the day. Here's a few ideas to try out:

Breakfast

Dried Fruit

Spread fruit toast with light cream cheese; top with fruit.

Spread 2 slices of bread with light cream cheese spread. Top one bread with 1/2 banana, sliced and the other bread with raisins. Close together to make a breakfast sandwich you'll remember.

Cut apple into slices; remove and discard core. Spread with light cream cheese; sprinkle liberally with your favourite cereal, chopped nuts, or raisins. Yum!

Appetisers

For quick and easy appetizer nibblers, spread cream cheese on flour tortillas. Top with desired sliced deli or cooked meats and vegetables; roll tightly. Slice on the diagonal.

Spread creamcheese on water crackers, toasted pumpernickel or dark rye rounds. Sprinkle with chopped dill or chives; top with smoked salmon. Works a treat!

Try mixing together 1/2 cup cream cheese with 1 grated carrot and 1/4 cup dried cranberries - or maybe give some dried fruit a try? Fill stalks of celery with mixture; cut into bite-size pieces.

Dips

Tuna and Salsa Dip:
Combine 1 pkg (250g) cream cheese with 1/2 cup tuna, or perhaps some prawns, 1/4 cup salsa, and 2 Tbsp. chopped coriander. Serve with crackers, doubt you'll regret it.

Tuscan Dip:
Blend 1 pkg (250g) cream cheese, softened, with 2 Tbsp. sour cream. Add 1/2 cup finely chopped oil-packed sun-dried tomatoes, drained, 1/2 cup chopped black pitted olives, and 1/4 cup finely chopped red onions. Glass of Chianti optional.

Dill Sauce/Dip:
Ready? Place 1 sliced green onion, 1 garlic clove, and 1 Tbsp. fresh dill in food processor; process until finely chopped. Add 1 pkg. (250 g) cream cheese, 3 Tbsp. lemon juice, 1 Tbsp. olive oil, and a pinch of salt; process until smooth. Spoon over grilled vegetables, or place in a bowl for dipping. Hey presto, you're a domestic goddess (or god, as the case may be!)

Snacks/Sandwiches

Fruit and Nut Bites:
Try topping crackers with cream cheese and jam (strawberry's good!); sprinkle with a few toasted sliced almonds. Works for me!

Croque Monsieur (AKA Fancy Toasted Sandwich):
Spread 1 Tbsp. of cream cheese on a toasted thick slice of crusty bread. Top with sliced ham and shredded cheese; grill until cheese (or partner's heart) is melted.

Party Cheese Ball:
Blend 1-1/2 cups shredded cheddarcheese with 1/2 cup cream cheese, softened. If you like, add 1 Tbsp. port wine. Wrap in a sheet of plastic wrap and shape into a ball. Refrigerate about an hour or so before unwrapping. Roll in paprika or very finely chopped toasted nuts. How's that for a block party? Sorry, couldn't resist.

Try this: spread flour tortilla with cream cheese. Sprinkle with grated carrot and a few raisins. Roll up tightly, cut in half, and devour!

Producing Pectin from fruit wastes

Pectin is a polysaccharide material that can be extracted from fruit pulp, and pods of citrus such as lemon, lime, oranges and grapes. In view of its high gel forming ability, pectin is widely used in the food industry, especially in the preparation of jams, jellies, fruit juices, preserved canned fruits, and in confectionaries. Medically, pectin is useful in the treatment of diarrhea.

Avoid the Vending Machine - Bring Healthy Snacks to the Office

Now that more and more corporations are instituting employee weight loss programs it is easier for employees to develop good eating habits in the workplace. Be prepared for the mid-morning or afternoon craving for a snack or a treat. Stay away from the vending machine and dig into your own bag of nutritional and healthy goodies.

Here are some tips for eating healthy snacks in the office:

Dried Fruit

o Raw nuts (organic if you can) are a great way to stave off hunger pangs. They are packed with nutrition and healthy oils. Stay away from roasted or processed because they are loaded with salt and oil. Raw almonds are great for dieting, walnuts, Brazilian nuts and Hazel nuts.
o Dried fruit is great to accompany the nuts. The two together are almost a meal in itself. Don't go overboard with the dried fruit because it is concentrated with sugar. If you can go organic, it's the better choice. Try organic raisins or cranberries, dried apples or figs. The nuts and fruit don't need refrigeration so you can stow a baggie in your drawer for a quick snack.
o High-fiber crackers with low sodium and high amounts of grain. There are so many healthy, nutritious crackers to choose from.
o Almond butter is better than peanut butter. High fiber, good fat and more nutritious than peanut butter. It's a great substitute for butter.

These are only a few suggestions for keeping on track through any weight loss program that you're on. We all know that the workplace is loaded with land mines in the fridge, near the water cooler, in the vending machine. Be smart and stay on track and bring your own nutritious snacks to work.

Employee weight loss programs are always a great idea to keep your employees healthy, and happy. Billings Farnsworth is a freelance writer.

Hair Dandruff & Flaky Scalp Remedies

During winter or in cold weathers, some individuals develop dry and itchy scalp. This problem is also confronted by some individuals when they move from hot environments to cold situations. The scalp turns tight and itchy upon onset of cold weather. When the hair is combed or brushed small scraps of dead skin peels off. This dry scalp situation goes by the name of dandruff. A number of scalp situations might be caused by dandruff. It is important to know that all primary symptoms of a trouble of scalp may not be dandruff.
In case the scalp is peeling off, dry skin in the hairline or top of the head with dust like small and powdery while flakes, is most probably a case of seasonal dry scalp. This may not call for any medication. Hair dandruff flakes having diameters of 1 mm plus represent a more challenging scalp condition. Inflammation on itchy parts and dry patches near nose, ears and breast could be an indication of psoriasis or eczema for which a visit to a dermatologist is essential.
Dandruff can amass for numerous reasons. Incorrect eating habits, constipation, cool conditions, emotional tension can be named as reasons.  There are several flaky scalp treatments which can be abided by at home. Fenugreek seeds form a very important cure for hair dandruff. Soak two tablespoons of these seeds overnight in water and mash to a fine paste in the morning. Use on the scalp, wait for half an hour and wash hair thoroughly with soap-nut solution. Using a teaspoon of fresh lime juice followed by the last rinse is another remedy. Rinse hair twice a week with two tablespoons of green gram powder mixed with half a cupful of curd. Hair dandruff can be got rid of by diluting cider vinegar with same quantity of water and patting the solution on to hair with a cotton wool in between shampooing. The liquid needs to be rubbed over the scalp.
The Home dandruff remedies are successful in treating an itchy scalp. Dietetic alterations are vital and you must cohere to it. A five day fruit diet accompanied with a meal of citrus fruits and canned fruits to be taken three times everyday. However keep off citrus fruits, bananas, dried fruits and canned fruits. A well balanced diet rich in raw solid foods specially fresh fruits and vegetables should be taken thenceforth. Also avoid meat, white flour, sugar, strong beverages, pickles, processed food products.
The scalp has to be kept clear to cure dandruff and prevent the collection of dead cells. Brushing the hair everyday is important as it improves blood circulation and removes flakiness.  Brushing should be done by bending forward with the head faced down and combing from nape of the neck towards the head. Use a shampoo and conditioner of the proper quality to eliminate the hair dandruff.

Any dandruff problem can be controlled with the proper dandruff home remedy. If done properly the condition can be fixed for good as well. It all starts with knowing the root cause of the problem. This is the first step. Then it can be properly cured. Only this approach will guarantee a favorable outcome. Visit http://flakyscalptreatment.com/ or click on Hair Dandruff

Home Made Energy Bars For Runners

Want an alternative to those expensive sports/energy bars that you buy in the specialty running stores? This recipe for home made energy bars is delicious and easy to make.

Save money, be natural, and get the nutrients you need to perform well in sports.

Dried Fruit

My teenage daughter and my 70 year old uncle both love these energy bars. You can vary the ingredients dramatically and they're still delicious. Try using raisins or apricots or a combination of dried fruit.

Ingredients

1 C rolled oats
1 1/2 C almonds, chopped semi-fine
1 1/2 C dried cranberries
1/2 C nonfat dried milk
1/2 C ground flax seeds
3/4 C sugar
2 tsp butter
1 C corn syrup/honey - either one or a combo
1 1/4 C peanut butter

Chop almonds. Mix dry and wet ingredients until well-combined. Spread on a flat baking sheet lined with foil or wax paper or roll in balls. Roll balls in chocolate chips for a special addition or press chips on top of flat mixture. Cut into separate portions, wrap with foil, and keep in freezer until needed. No baking is required.

The recipe above costs maybe to make and produces about 30 bars! If you buy energy bars in a store, you are paying at least per bar. Big difference in cost - especially if you've got a teenager eating them by the handful. I didn't do a calorie calculation on these but my guess is it would be pretty high. That's what you want in an energy bar - lots of instant energy (fruit and sugars), along with fats, and protein for a full complement of nutrients.

Hair Treatments for Dry Hair

Hair treatments for dry hair focus on providing hydration and moisture retention. Follicles, the root and follicle bulbs require 5-8% moisture content for healthy development and cell growth. Adding hydration through external or internal applications greatly decreases the occurrence of dry hair and scalp.

Top 50 Iron Rich Foods - Boost Your Energy and Beat Low Iron Symptoms

Increasing your intake of iron rich foods should not be too difficult. All it takes is for you to know which of the foods you eat are rich in iron, and start planning your meals accordingly. Sadly, the extent of most people's knowledge, when it comes to iron and iron rich foods, is just too limited.

For a quick read on where to start you can read our article on Foods with an Iron Punch, but here we'll give a much more in depth overview of the best iron Rich Foods complete with their Iron content.

The data has been extracted from the USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference Release 22 from September 2009 which contains all the nutritional data for well over 7,000 food items. Unfortunately you can't just download the database and do a quick sort on Iron content to give you the best Iron Rich Foods. Actually you can, but the problem is that the list you get won't be very helpful in your daily life as the top items would be things like freeze dried parsley, dried thyme, beluga meat, cumin seed and all kinds of other foods you wouldn't eat in large enough quantities to help you load up on Iron.

We have done the hard work for you and have carefully reviewed the USDA database and compiled this list of Top 50 Iron Rich Foods and have listed them by category so you know that when you eat meat what meat to choose, when you buy vegetables what to put in your shopping cart and when you need a quick snack what can help you boost your iron intake in just a few minutes.

This list is not a complete list of the iron content of all possible food items - if you don't see it here it just means it isn't particularly high on Iron.

Eat these Iron Rich Foods, combine them with Iron Absorption Enhancers, avoid Iron Absorption Inhibitors and you'll be well on your way to boost your Iron levels and get rid of those Low Iron Symptoms!

Breakfast Cereals
Fortified breakfast cereal is one of your best bets to boost your Iron intake and below is a short list of some of them. As you can see eating just a single serving of these will give you around 18 mg Iron, but bear in mind that the typical absorption rate of a healthy adult is only approximately 10% to 15% of dietary iron. So drink a glass of Orange juice with your cereal to boost your absorption. Also, bear in mind that the last two items in this last are dry, i.e. before you have added milk or water to them!
Ralston Enriched Bran Flakes: 27 mg/cup Kellog's Complete Oat Bran Flakes: 25 mg/cup General Mills Multi-Grain Cheerios: 24 mg/cup Kellog's All-Bran Complete Wheat Flakes: 24 mg/cup Malt-O-Meal, plain, dry: 92 mg/cup Cream of Wheat, instant, dry: 51 mg/cup

Meat
Red meat is high on iron and it comes in the heme form you body most easily absorbs; typically 15% to 35% of heme iron is absorbed by your body. Organ meats are the best sources of iron within the meat category and of these liver is probably the most popular so we've included it the list since we don't know too many people who'll eat spleen or lungs we've excluded these kinds of organs. If you like liver then go for goose liver expensive, but very nice! or at least opt for pork liver instead of beef liver. When you opt for red meat in your diet add some less standard options like Emu, Ostrich or Duck instead of beef.
Goose liver, raw: 31 mg / 100g Pork liver, cooked: 18 mg / 100g Chicken liver, cooked: 13 mg / 100g Lamb liver, cooked: 10 mg / 100g Beef liver, cooked: 7 mg / 100g Emu, cooked: 7 mg / 100g Ostrich oyster, cooked: 5 mg / 100g Quail meat, raw: 5 mg / 100g Duck breast, raw: 5 mg / 100g Beef, steak, cooked: 4 mg / 100g Beef, ground, cooked: 3 mg / 100g

Dried Fruit

Fish and Shellfish
Fish is not often considered as a good source of iron and most finfish is indeed not, only the oily fish like mackerel and sardines provide you with a decent amount of iron. So when you want to eat fish, opt for oily fish which gives you the most iron and is high in omega-3 too. When you add shellfish into the equation suddenly we find some of the best Iron Rich Foods you can find, especially clams think clam chowder. A quick comparison with the meat category shows that octopus or cuttlefish beat all the regular meats in terms of iron content and are only outdone by liver. So, it's time to add some stir fried squid to your weekly menu.
Clams, canned, drained solids: 28 mg / 100g Clams, cooked: 28 mg / 100g Fish caviar, black and red: 12 mg / 100g Cuttlefish, cooked: 11 mg / 100g Octopus, cooked: 10 mg / 100g Oyster, medium sized, cooked: 10 mg / 100g Anchovy, canned in oil: 5 mg / 100g Shrimp, cooked: 3 mg / 100g Sardine, canned in oil: 3 mg / 100g Mackerel, cooked: 2 mg / 100g

Vegetables
Vegetables are an essential part of your diet, full of essential nutrients and most people don't eat enough of them, but when it comes to Iron most vegetables are not too hot. If you choose your vegetables carefully then can use vegetables to help you boost your iron levels, especially if you include some iron absorption enhancers in your diet as the non-heme iron in vegetables is not easily absorbed by your body. Vegetables in the Top 50 Iron Rich Foods include various beans, potato skins, tomatoes and green leafy vegetables like spinach, chard and parsley. Chili con carne, which combines meat, kidney beans and tomato sauce, makes an excellent Iron Rich Recipe, but so does a white bean salad with plenty of fresh parsley and light vinaigrette.
Mushrooms, morel, raw: 12 mg / cup Tomatoes, sun-dried: 5 mg / cup Potato skins, baked: 4 mg / skin Parsley, raw: 4 mg / cup Soybeans, boiled: 9 mg / cup Spinach, boiled, drained: 6 mg / cup Tomato sauce, canned: 9 mg / cup Lentils, boiled: 7 mg / cup Hearts of palm, canned: 5 mg / cup White Beans, canned: 8 mg / cup Kidney beans, boiled: 5 mg / cup Chickpeas, boiled: 5 mg / cup Pinto Beans, frozen, boiled: 3 mg / cup Lima beans, boiled: 4 mg / cup Hummus, commercial: 6 mg / cup Swiss Chard, boiled, chopped: 4 mg / cup Asparagus, canned: 4 mg / cup Chickpeas, canned: 3 mg / cup Tomatoes, canned: 3 mg / cup Sweet potato, canned, mashed: 3 mg / cup Endive, raw: 4 mg / head

Nuts and Seeds
Nuts and seeds are great Iron Rich Foods in that they have a pretty high iron content and are so versatile that you can eat them in many ways. A quick snack on some cashew nuts is filling, healthy and gives plenty of iron - tasty too! Pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds can be easily toasted and added to a salad for a nice crunch and an iron boost. Sesame seeds are used in a variety of Asian dishes and all of these can be used in baking or as a quick addition to your breakfast cereal. Just make sure you always have some in the house and you'll soon find many ways to add them into your day-to-day food.
Sesame seeds, whole, dried: 21 mg/cup Pumpkin seeds and squash seed kernels, dried: 11 mg/cup Sunflower seed kernels, toasted: 9 mg/cup Cashew nuts, dry roasted, halves and whole: 8 mg/cup Pistachio nuts, dry roasted: 5 mg/cup Almonds, whole kernels, blanched: 5 mg/cup

Fruit
Fresh fruit is not rich in Iron, but dried fruit like apricots, peaches or prunes are great Iron Rich Snacks to eat in between meals or to add to various recipes. The one thing you must remember about fresh fruit is that most of it contains a lot of Vitamin C and since Vitamin is an Iron Absorption Enhancer eating fresh fruit or vegetables high in Vitamin C with your meal can greatly boost the amount of iron your body actually absorbs.
Apricots, dehydrated low-moisture: 8 mg/cup Peaches, dehydrated low-moisture: 6 mg/cup Prunes, dehydrated low-moisture: 5 mg/cup Olives, canned jumbo: 0.3 mg / olive Currants, dried: 5 mg/cup Apricots, dried, sulfured, uncooked: 4 mg/cup Blueberries, canned: 7 mg/cup

Iron Rich Snacks
Apart from the nuts and dried fruit there are quick and easy Iron Rich Snacks which you can simply buy in the supermarket and use as a instant Iron Booster. Below or some examples, but if you're planning to buy some bars or drinks then you need to remember to check the nutrition labels on the actual products you buy as the actual Iron content can vary greatly from brand to brand and even from product to product within the same brand.
Nestle Supligen, canned supplement drink 9 mg / can Snickers Marathon Honey Nut Oat Bar: 8 mg / bar Snickers Marathon Double Chocolate Nut Bar 8 mg / bar Snickers Marathon Multigrain Crunch Bar: 8 mg / bar Pretzels, soft: 6 mg / large Trail mix, regular: 3 mg / cup

Eggs:
Dairy products are not high in Iron, but do contain a lot of calcium and calcium has been known to act as a Iron Absorption Inhibitor so you should try and eat calcium rich foods separate from your Iron Rich Foods as much as possible. Eggs are not too high in Iron, but egg yolks are not too bad and if you can find fresh goose eggs they could be used in a great Iron Rich Breakfast!
Goose Egg, whole: 5 mg / egg Egg yolk, raw: 7 mg iron / cup Egg, scrambled: 3 mg iron / cup

Iron Rich Foods

Iron is extremely important for basic metabolic processes and is a building block of many proteins and enzymes that maintain good health. It is an essential component of proteins involved in oxygen transport and is necessary for the regulation of cell growth. A deficiency of iron limits oxygen delivery to cells, resulting in fatigue, poor work performance, and a diminished immune system; whereas excess amounts of iron in the diet can result in toxicity and increased morbidity. Although iron supplementation is accessible, it is not advisable unless you have been diagnosed with anemia. The best and most bioavailable way to increase and maintain a good level of iron is through food sources.

The highest and most useful sources of iron are heme sources - meats and eggs. But if you are a vegetarian other options for iron intake is available but should be eaten with a vitamin C source for proper absorption.

Dried Fruit

Some herbs that have a lot of iron that you can add to your diet in tea form or as a tincture mixed with juice - chickweed, catnip, burdock root, parsley, and alfalfa (in order of potency) Another wonderful iron rich herb is kelp; you can sprinkle it on rice or potatoes, mix in with your scrambled eggs or put it in soups. It is often found in the bulk spice isle of your local market in granulated form. Kelp has a wide spectrum of minerals and is extremely high in iron - 2T has all the DV of minerals for an adult! Plus it is very flavorful.

Let's Eat Outside - Great Kid-Friendly Picnic Ideas

Summer is finally here and with the kids home all day this is the perfect time for a picnic. Pack up some food, cool drinks and a blanket and head for the park, playground or even just the backyard. You can even entertain your little ones with a picnic on the kitchen or living room floor on a rainy day.

Of course you could just fix some PB&J sandwiches, pack a couple of juice boxes and call it a picnic, but there are so many other fun and delicious things you could prepare. Here are a few suggestions to get your creative juices flowing.

Dried Fruit

A New Twist for PB&J

Pack a few rice cakes, a small jar of peanut butter, some raisins and other dried fruit as well as some apples. When it's time to eat, spread peanut butter on the rice cake and let your child decorate it with the dried and fresh fruit. Raisins become eyes, a slice of apple the mouth and a berry makes a great nose.

Crackers and Cheese

Buy some hard cheese, such as cheddar, slice it (or buy it pre-sliced from the deli), and cut shapes out with small cookie cutters. You can also use cookie cutters on thicker slices of ham, salami or bologna. Serve with an assortment of crackers, and fresh fruit, such as grapes or berries.

Deli Style Sandwiches

Get some sub rolls, a little mayo and mustard (the small packs you get at fast food places work great for a picnic), and a variety of deli style sandwich meat and cheeses. Top it all off with a few leaves of lettuce that you washed at home and brought in a plastic baggie. Let each family member create their own sub with their favorite meats and cheeses. A bag of chips completes the meal.

"Fried Chicken Strips" With Veggies n' Dip

Use some crushed cornflakes to bread chicken breast strips and bake them in the oven until done. You can do this the night before the picnic and refrigerate the chicken strips - they are delicious cold. Cut up some veggies like peppers, celery, cucumber, broccoli and cauliflower and add some baby carrots. Bring a little ranch dressing to use as a dip and your picnic is complete.

Desserts

Fresh fruit of course always makes for a great portable dessert on a picnic. Some homemade or store-bought cookies are another great option. Bake a batch of brownies, cut them and bag them after they have cooled completely for a chocolaty treat.

Grab a cooler, fix some sandwiches and head out to the park, playground or even the backyard for a picnic. Don't forget lots of water on warm days!

Does Fruit Make You Fat?

When dieting, or just trying to eat healthy many people try to stick to fruits and vegetables for their snacks.  However, many of the fab diets don't allow you to eat fruit because of its glycemic load, or sugar.  So what's the deal?   Compared to many unhealthy alternative snacks, fruits are a great choice and fruits are the healthiest way to take in sugar, however you do need to understand that many fruits are in fact very high in sugar and if you are trying to lose weight, you may want to limit some of them. Fresh fruits are a great snack and are filled with vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants, so you don't want to just cut them out of your diet.  It is recommended that the average adult takes in 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables a day, or according to the USDA take in 1.5-2 cups of fruit each day.  So which fruits are best to give you the vitamins and nutrients and what's too much??  Here are a couple tips to remember when picking your snack:

Dehydrated Fruit - A Healthier Snack Alternative For Kids

Let's face it - most kids live on junk food. Children just love sweet snacks and parents all over the country are incessantly frustrated in trying to figure out ways to make their children eat healthier snacks. For this problem, dehydrated fruit can be the simple solution.

In the beginning, you as a parent might be skeptical, as fruits are not that popular with young children. But dehydrated fruit is still a sweet snack, and what kid will not go for a sweet snack? Give it a chance, you might be surprised at how receptive your kids could be to nutritious snacks.

Dried Fruit

You might wonder, if we are trying to dissuade children from eating too much sugary snacks, why are we going to offer them dehydrated fruit? Isn't that yet another source of sugar? The answer is yes, dehydrated fruit does have sugar in it, but the difference is that the sugar in dehydrated fruit is natural, as opposed to the sugar in junk foods, which is refined and can cause more harm to the body.

Let us go into it a little further. Junk foods contain processed sugar. What happens to this sugar upon ingestion is that it immediately enters a person's bloodstream and is converted to fat.

This rapid absorption causes the person to get hungry again at a much faster rate, and so it causes greater food consumption. This is why processed sugar is one of the leading factors in obesity.

On the other hand, the natural sugar in dehydrated fruit, while it can still enter a person's bloodstream, is not as harmful as the refined variety. Natural sugar takes much longer to enter the bloodstream so the body has more time to burn it, and less of it is converted to fat.

This does not mean, though, that it is okay to consume unlimited amounts of dehydrated fruit. You must still know how to eat in moderation, as natural sugar can still be a cause of obesity.

Still, no matter how you look at it, dehydrated fruit is an infinitely better snack choice rather than junk foods. When your kids get used to that idea, they will carry it as they grow older, and that will give them a better and healthier life.

The Latest Food Craze - Oatmeal Anyone?

Can you imagine that oatmeal would ever be the latest food craze? It is supposed to be very healthy for you brings down cholesterol levels, is full of fiber, keeps your insulin levels stable and fills you up. But now everybody's trying to get onto the bandwagon. Yes, McDonald's are doing it, Starbucks are doing it, and many other places also.

Starbucks are pushing a plain version with packets of brown sugar, dried fruit and nuts for toppings. McDonald's is selling it with maple flavoring sprinkled with fresh apple chunks raisins and dried cranberries. Caribou coffee is offering a choice of flavors including maple brown sugar crunch, sounds to me like they getting into the least healthy version here. Jamba juice a well-known smoothie chain has also a version of oatmeal. Get on trend for breakfast, looks like the health bug is going to hit us all.

Dried Fruit

Actually I think these companies are pretty clever really, although we have less money these days, the oatmeal is marketed at around two dollars and most of us will think we can afford that. On top of that will be telling ourselves that it's healthy, it's good for us, so why not. Oatmeal can be cooked very easily in the microwave, in less than two minutes, but if we're running late and we missed breakfast, then a quick drive through a McDonald's, for a item is probably okay.

However, we must beware of the extras on top of the oatmeal, as dried fruit and nuts come with hefty calorie values, if we are going to be sitting at a desk all day. If you go on a long run at lunchtime, then certainly allow yourself the dried fruit and nuts

Sometimes it is very hard to come up with appropriate gift ideas. This is especially true when shopping for a friend or family member you do not see much. Quite often as people age their tastes changes. Plus, as people go through life they tend to accumulate many items. This means that figuring out just what would make the perfect gift can be downright impossible and very frustrating.

However, instead of trying to guess what someone's favorite color is or to take a shot at guessing their size, why not consider giving some type of food as a gift. Nut gifts are practical as most people enjoy snacking on all types of nuts such as pistachios, peanuts, almonds and cashew nuts. There are several top-rated nut specialty gift shops in operation on the internet today that offer luscious chocolate covered almonds, tasty giant whole cashews, sugared almonds, dry-roasted peanuts and a whole lot more. You can choose a fancy gift basket that includes a jar of delicious pistachio butter and some prime nuts and dried fruit. This type of gift is welcome by people of all ages. It would be a very unique gift that is certain to delight anyone on your gift-giving list.

Dried Fruit

If you have ever had the pleasure of eating Jordan almonds then you certainly know that these are the absolute best candied almonds available. The large, flat almonds are lightly floured and sugared to produce a delicate outer shell that makes them neat and easy to eat. These almonds come in a rainbow of beautiful colors and when wrapped in colored gift mesh and placed in a large basket they make the perfect gift for any occasion. You can easily find a very wide selection of these prime and delicious candy-coated almonds by conducting a search online using a search term such as 'Jordan almonds wholesale'. It does not matter if you need a birthday, anniversary or shower gift, Jordan almonds are sure to be very well received.

There are so many delicious choices you have when it comes to dried fruit and premium nuts. You can simply order a pre-made gift basket from one of the specialty shops online or you can pick and choose the exact type of specialty food you would like to buy to give as gifts. This way you can create your own hand-made gift baskets using vintage baskets, pretty ribbon and some colorful cellophane paper.

Fruits That Make You Lose Weight

Eating fruit brings a lot of health benefits. Fruit is good for us. When we were children we were no doubt told to eat fruit because it was good for us. Today, as parents with children of our own, we preach the same message to them. The truth is, fruit is good for us.

It has virtually no cholesterol, helps to protect us against cancer, and is a good source of fibre. How does this help us lose weight? Fibre helps control your blood sugar level, and following on from this, it helps us control our hunger. Good examples of foods which are high in fibre are strawberries. apples, pears, beans and oatmeal. Fruits such as bananas and apples are particularly good at making you feel full for a long time after you have eaten them, so making you eat less.

Dried Fruit

Other fruits which are readily available in the supermarkets and which are good sources of soluble fibre are pears, cherries, plums, peaches, kiwi fruit, grapes and tomatoes. These will all help you lose weight.

Not all fruit will help you lose weight. Canned fruit for example comes in heavy syrup and natural juices. The better choice is the fruit in natural juice.

Dried fruit too has high energy levels because all the water is removed, so they are not the best choice for weight loss. The best choice has to be fresh fruit because it has the least number of calories and will fill you up naturally. There are no added sugars.

Fresh fruit is just one component of a healthy diet and makes an excellent choice for a snack.

Losing weight with the right diet

If you are interested in losing weight but nothing seems to work, then it might not be such a bad idea to check out the Internet and its specialized resources. In just a couple of minutes, you will come across a specialized resource that teaches you all about dieting, with guaranteed results. Surely, apart from eating healthy and exercising a lot, you can add supplements to your diet that will contribute to losing weight. Among these supplements, you can find soups, shakes, teas and other healthy choices that will certainly put a smile on your face.
For those of you who are looking for individualized diets, it might be recommended to use a short form and complete the required fields. In this way, you can find the best diet for losing weight, without putting your health at risk or anything else. In order to find the right diet, you will have to select the age category, how much weight do you want to lose (in lbs), specify how often do you work out (from every day to never), to rate your eating style (poor, average, good and very good) and also the kind of diet that you would prefer (soups, shakes, snacks, pills, teas or no special preference).
Once you have decided that you want to purchase some of these products, you can move on towards finding out specific information about them. A diet that is based on healthy eating and such supplements can only lead to losing weight, so you will have only benefits to gain from that. For example, if you choose a flavored shake (wild berry, vanilla, soy or anything else for that matter), you are informed from the start that the sachet contains only healthy substances, such as carbohydrates, protein, vitamin and minerals, healthy fats and fibers. Even though that it contains only beneficial substances, no diet for losing weight should be started before visiting the general practitioner.
Sometimes, the best way to convince yourself about diet products is to read or hear what others have to say about it. This means that you can read the reviews written by other satisfied customers and see for yourself if this product is worth for you or not. Do not waste your time trying different diets that might end up doing you a lot of harm when you can search for products that can easily replace a meal. Choose a healthy shake or even a soup, taking in only nutrients and not fats that are unnecessary, increasing the level of cholesterol in your blood. Make sure that you are losing weight and not suffering from other health problems.
Are you ready to start losing weight? If the answer is yes, then you can choose a delicious munch bar, a chocolate brownie or fruit-flavored shake. Add to that some soups and a tea and you will have the perfect recipe or diet for losing weight. Even though you might be tempted to say no to the pills, you should know that these contain Acai berries and other dried fruits that have fat-burning properties. So, you see, you have only to gain from choosing this kind of diet for losing weight.

Our website contains only health substances that are the basis of any diet for losing weight. So what are you waiting for? Come and visit us.

10 Ways to Eat Your Fruits and Vegetables

We all know we should eat our fruits and vegetables as they are beneficial for our health. Fruit and vegetables are an important part of a balanced diet. Health advisory organisations recommend we eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day to help reduce cancer risks and improve heart health. Numerous studies have proven and demonstrated their life-extending, health-enhancing, disease-fighting and weight-managing ability. Despite the fact that most people are aware of this fact, few, however, eat their recommended 5 portions per day. Moreover, many experts argue that 5 portions a day is not enough. It is now widely advisable to eat 9 or even 12 portions of fruit and vegetable daily. How to do that? Here are 10 ways that will help you increase the amount of fruits and vegetables you eat.

Juice for start. Drink a fresh fruit juice before your breakfast. It is much more energizing than coffee and provides the essential energy to kick-start your day. This is a very convenient juice and smoothie cookbook that will provide you with invaluable inspiration.

Dried Fruit

Fruits to your breakfast. Put fresh or dried fruits to your cereal or use a natural fruit spread on your bread. You can even use some very soft and mature fruit instead of a jam or spread. Try a browned banana, a ripe fig or a very soft apricot. Click here for a huge collection of breakfast recipes.

Snack on fruit. When you are a bit hungry between meals, grab a fruit. Bananas and clementines are the best snack foods that you can carry around. They need no washing and taste great.

Fruit snack. If you want something fast to eat at home, try a fruit snack. Add graded apple in your yogurt or enjoy a homemade snack bar with dried fruit and nuts.

Fruit dessert. Instead of cake, ice cream, chocolate or other type of sweet, have a fruit for dessert. Although it is not advisable to eat your fruit after the meal, it is always a better choice than sugary sweets. If you want to eat a fruit every so often, choose a fruit dessert, like baked pears or banana cream. I have found a great book that I use when I am looking for delicious healthy fruit desserts to cook on my TV shows.

Salad with every meal. Whatever you eat, always serve it with a raw dried salad that provides you with the fiber, vitamins and enzymes required to digest your food and obtain the most value out of its nutrients. If you want more info about the benefits of a raw vegan nutrition check this out.

Salad meal. Have a big salad for meal. This is a great way to make sure you maximize the intake of vegetables in your diet. In fact, all your main meals could well be big salads that combined with one or two other kinds of energy dense foods, like fish, meat, eggs, bread, pasta, rice, etc. If you are looking for great salad recipes, you can click here.

Vegetable Recipes. There are endless recipes that contain vegetables. It is good to learn how to make them and order them when you eat out. There are countless vegetable recipe books. Some of the best ones are listed here.

Vegetables on the side. Regardless of your main dish, serve it with vegetables. Add some boiled, steamed or grilled veggies next to the fish, meat, omelet or any other kind of meal. When at a buffet, always fill half of the plate with colorful vegetables, preferably raw salad. The other half of the plate can be divided in two. Fill one quarter with the main dish of your choice and appetizers or a slice of bread in the last quarter. Stick to this analogy and you will enjoy a great meal.

Add extra veggies. Whichever recipe you're recreating, always add some extra veggies. Even if the recipe doesn't call for it, make it a habit to top up on its veggie content. Add some peppers on your spaghetti sauce, add some mushrooms on your pizza, add some carrots in the soup.

Chose one or more and start today. It has never been that easy to include fruits and vegetables in your diet.

Digestion, Vegetables, and Fruits - How Are They Related?

Inadequate bowel movements, frequent bloating of the stomach, flatulence etc may be the symptoms of indigestion. Factors that may help improve these conditions are water, fibrous diet such as vegetables and fruits. Consume a lot of green leafy vegetables and sprouted grams which not only have fibre in them but also contains enzymes which is essential for the body functioning. Even your brain requires enzymes for its own functioning. They break down the toxins that store up in your cells and bloodstream so that they can be safely excreted.
Fresh greens and grains useful for bowel movement are:
• Cucumber
• Drum stick
• Green grams
• Sprouted grams
• Carrots
• Cabbage
• Spinach
Most of the above fibrous food can prove to be advantageous when it is eaten raw. It is said that when these food is eaten raw they are rich in enzymes which promotes bowel movement. If you take plant enzymes, most plant enzymes are quite stable in the stomach environment and go to work. This gives the plant enzymes an edge on digestion over animal/pancreatic enzymes. Plant enzymes can be working on food for at least an hour before the food proceeds to the small intestine. In addition to this, healthy skin, organs, teeth, breathing, brain function, and digestion depend on enzymes. Fibre also adds bulk to your faeces and generates an urge to be expelled out. This way a bowel movement is created naturally.
Do not forget the water along with fibrous food. If excessive fibrous food is added to your diet it may harm the mucuous membrane as it is hard. In addition to this, water is required to loosen up your stools. If not, it may augment the constipation problems.
Legumes, grams, corn and whole wheat bread have a lot of nutritional value besides adding fibre to your diet. They are rich in proteins, iron, minerals and anti oxidants too. Natural remedy for bowel problems is derived from plant materials, that is, the fruits, fresh greens and grains. It is also essential for proper weight maintenance and regulation of blood sugar.
In addition to these fresh greens and grains, drinking adequate amount of water can be of help in several of these cases, and even aid in their prevention. Diarrhoea, watery stool, can cause severe dehydration, so it is important to maintain body fluid if suffering from that. On the flipside, constipation can also use water to help break down the otherwise dry stool.

Feed the Birds - Make Wild Bird Food at Home

Although it is possible to purchase some wild food such as wild bird seed to encourage birds to show up in your back yard, another option you have is to actually make your own bird food. It's really easy to make a tasty treat for the birds, and it allows you to help give the birds some variation in their diet, since they shouldn't be surviving on seeds alone anyway. Here is a look at a simple recipe that will allow you to make plenty of wild bird food on your own.

What You Will Need

Dried Fruit

First, you need to gather all of the ingredients that you are going to need to make this wild bird food. You will need rolled oats, and you should not try to substitute this with instant oats. You will also need some peanuts, some commercial wild bird food mix, some sunflower seeds, and some dried fruit. Some dried fruit options to include are cranberries or raisins, although almost any dried fruit will be fine to put in the mix of food.

Making the Food

Now that you have all the ingredients together, you can begin making the fed. Put all the ingredients in a large bowl. Mix the ingredients together well so everything is mixed up and evenly distributed throughout the mix. It won't matter how much of each ingredient you end up using. Just remember to put more oats in the mix than you do nuts or fruit.

Once you have made the wild bird food, you are ready to put it outside. You can put it out on the ground or if you have some bird feeders, put the food inside the feeders for the birds to find. Once you begin putting this feed out for the birds, you'll be able to enjoy many different types of birds in your yard, since the feed will attract them. For just the few dollars you pay for the ingredients, you can add the color, beauty, and sound of birds to your life.

If you've followed the news on childhood obesity lately, you know the state of affairs is pretty grim. Childhood obesity rates have tripled over the past two decades, and most signs point to the next generation being the first whose life expectancy will be shorter than their parents'. Much of the blame for this trend has deservedly been laid at the feet of the producers and marketers of unhealthy food aimed at our youngest consumers, whose parents face an uphill battle: trying to pit fresh, healthy foods devoid of mascots or sidekicks against superheroes and cartoon animals in a struggle to tempt their children's palates and stomachs.

The benefits of a diet of high potassium foods are improved bone density, reduced cardiovascular disease, including lower blood pressure, less chance of heart attack and stroke, and less likelihood of developing kidney stones. There are two goals for you to get these benefits. One is to get 4.7 grams of potassium a day, and the other is to get 3 times as much potassium as sodium a day.

There are a number of ready to eat cereals that can fulfill the high potassium to sodium ratio. However most of them do not provide a large amount of potassium because each serving has very little weight. The puffed cereals are the worst in this regard, having very little weight. Air is used to puff them up. Because of this, they have very little potassium in a serving.

Dried Fruit

Home-made granola is one of the best ready to eat cereals. But there are a lot of different recipes for home-made granola, and the recipe examined by the FDA when it measured nutrients was not given. However, the more dried fruit and nuts used, the higher the potassium content the granola will have. It can easily provide more than 700 mg of potassium.

Three other notable ready to eat cereals are Kellogg All Bran, Toasted Wheat Germ, and Quaker Toasted Wheat Bran. They have a better than 3 to 1 ratio of potassium to sodium and can provide over 200 mg in a serving before adding anything. Toasted Wheat Germ can contribute over 1000 mg in a serving just itself.

For all of the cereals, adding dried fruit and nuts will add a great deal more potassium. By adding dried fruit and nuts, you can add 1000 mg of potassium to a dish. When you add a 1/2 cup of milk, you add more than 200 mg more potassium. Adding the milk, fruit and nuts should take very little time.

The major reason for eating ready to eat cereals for breakfast is convenience or lack of time. Pouring cereal from a box takes only a few moments. Adding dried fruit or nuts to the cereal will add only a few more moments. In exchange for these few moments you will increase the potassium a lot.

Making cooked cereal can add less than 2 to 5 minutes more time, and many of them are among the high potassium foods. If you do not have a really tight time schedule, you can use cooked cereal and fruit and nuts to have a high potassium breakfast in 2 to 5 minutes cooking time.

A diet of high potassium foods can improve blood pressure and bone density, and reduce the chances of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and kidney stones. The Institute of Medicine has recommended taking 4.7 grams of potassium a day, and consuming three times as much potassium as sodium in a day. With just a few moments at breakfast, you can get more than one third your recommended potassium for the day.

Different Ways to Take Care of Dry Skin

One of the most ordinary skin conditions that may be affecting you is dry skin. Dry skin, also called xerosis. Dry skin has a squat level of sebum and can be prone to sensitivity. The skin has a parched appear caused by its incapability to keep moisture. Dry skin most often occurs on the shins, hands and sides of the abdomen. It is more common during the winter months, when humidity is low. Some people also have a genetic, or hereditary, tendency to develop dry skin. In addition, elderly people tend to have more trouble with dry skin due to the natural changes in skin that occur with age. Chapping and cracking are signs of extremely dry, dehydrated skin.

Dried Fruit

- Fresh is best.

Stick with fresh produce if you want those pounds gone quickly.

Dried fruit or candied fruit is higher in calories and harder to digest because their natural water content has been removed in processing. Dried or dehydrated fruits are not going to help you lose weight like fresh fruit will. So avoid those for now.

- Salads

Salads are a great way to eat lots of healthy fresh vegetables that will fill you up. You can use dressing, however I recommend you make your own healthy salad dressing at home and avoid the high fat varieties at the grocery store. If you don't have time to make your own salad dressing be sure that you buy one that is low fat, low sugar or no sugar and all natural. And be sure it does not have high fructose corn syrup in it.

- Hydrating Quick Elimination Fruit

You want to eat fruit that is high in water content. These types will help you feel full, hydrate you and help you eliminate easier due to the fiber content. Some of these are: watermelon, cantaloupe, honey dew melon, oranges, and tangerines.

Natural Antioxidants - Foods That Everybody Should Eat

We all know that natural antioxidants are essential for you health. They fight cancer, straighten your immune system, and have anti-aging properties. But what exactly do you need to eat, to get all antioxidants your body needs?

Common sense tells us that since most antioxidants are well known vitamins, the best source for them is fruits and vegetables. This is true, even though not all veggies are the same in this respect. So if you want to make sure that your antioxidant intake is enough, you should chose vegetables and fruits that are high in antioxidants.

Natural antioxidants best sources

Usually you can judge how much antioxidants a particular fruit or vegetable has by its color. Brighter the color, more useful vitamins you will get from eating it. Berries are the leaders when it comes to antioxidants - blackberry, raspberry, strawberry, cranberry and blueberry are all high in flavonoids. Flavonoids successfully neutralise the damage free radicals can do to your health including effect of peroxyl radicals, superoxide radicals, hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl radicals, and singlet oxygen.

Healthy food doesn't have to be dull; you can make delicious deserts from berries. Adding sugar doesn't decrease berries antioxidant properties. However, adding milk, cream or any other milk product does. Apparently milk minimizes the effect of natural antioxidants. So keep this in mind when preparing berry deserts.

Oranges, grapefruits and other citruses are another popular source of antioxidant vitamins. If you prefer drinking fruit juice rather than eating oranges, chose freshly squeezed juices.

Where else to look for natural antioxidants

Not all antioxidants are in fruits and vegetables. Green tea is a great source of flavonoids. So if you are a tea lover, chose green varieties.

Another unusual source of antioxidants is coffee. Not only it helps you to wake up on a cold, slow morning, but it provides your body with antioxidants. According to a study by researchers at the University of Scranton, coffee is a leading source of antioxidants for Americans. Decaf coffee just as good antioxidant source as ordinary coffee, but you should remember - no milk.

Dark chocolate also contain antioxidants. So as you can see, sometimes foods we all love anyway, can bring great benefits to your health.

Including antioxidants in your diet

Teach yourself to eat fruits as snacks, instead of common junk snacks. Dry fruits are good natural source of antioxidants, dates and prunes being the leaders. But of course, if you are watching your weight you have to be careful, because all dry fruits are high on sugar as well.

Garnish like parsley, coriander and dill are excellent antioxidant sources. Add them to your meals. Most spices are also high in antioxidants, so not only they give your food rich flavor, but they also supply vitamins.

Stir fry is a preferred method of cooking, to preserve antioxidants in vegetables. Most vitamins are easily destroyed by heat, so less you cook your dish; the better it is for you.

Working antioxidant into you everyday life is not as difficult as you might think. One cup of black coffee in the morning, some fruit for a snack before lunch and a berry desert at dinner and you are all set. The key here is to do it regularly.

Raspberry: A Juicy Fruit

Raspberry is an edible fruit of the plants belonging to the genus Rubus and subgenus Idaeobatus. The term raspberry is actually used for the fruits of these plant species. The plants are perennial. They are actually grown for the fresh fruit market as fruits as well as for various grocery products like in the form of fruit juice, dried form or even in the form of puree. They are mid-summer plants but now a days technology has helped in the development of the varieties that can be cultivated throughout the year. The plants require ample sun and sufficient quantity of water for proper development. Wet and heavy soils or excess irrigation can result in the development of fungus responsible for root rot disease and finally the crop perishes. It prefers moist temperate regions. The seeds can be dispersed by birds along with their droppings.

Two types of commercially cultivated varieties are known namely summer bearing type and ever bearing type. The summer bearing types produce abundant fruit during the second year with very short fruiting in mid-summers. The ever bearing plants produce fruits in both first as well as second year of growth. They are generally planted in winter as dormant canes. A specialized production system known as long cane production is followed which involves growing the canes for one year in northern climate like Scotland or Washington State where chilling temperature for the bud is achieved very soon. These canes are then dug out and planted in warmer regions like Spain where they bear flowers and produce a very early season crop. The plants should be placed at a distance of about 1m from each other in well drained and fertile soil.

Dried Fruit

The flowers bear enough nectar for honey bees and other pollinators. The plant grows at a vigorous rate and can become invasive in local areas. The fruit is harvested when it comes out from the receptacle and acquires a deep colour ranging from red to deep purple depending upon the varieties. At the time of harvesting the fruits are sweetest and the excess fruits can be used to make jam. The leaves can be used either fresh or dried for making herbal and medicinal teas. They have an astringent flavor and are used for regulating menses in traditional system of medicine. A single raspberry weighs about 4 g on an average and is made up of about 100 drupelets which are juicy and bear a single and central seed. The bushes yield several fruits every year. Like dewberries and blackberries they have a when the receptacle is removed.

Raspberries are sometimes eaten by the larvae of some lepidopteran insects. They contain significant amounts of polyphenol antioxidants like anthocyanins which have a beneficial effect on human health. They are rich source of vitamin C and also B vitamins 1-3, folic acid, magnesium, copper, iron and manganese.

Can I Include Fiber in a Gluten Free Diet?

To keep your digestive system working properly and avoid constipation, it's important to include fiber in your diet. There are also studies that show increasing fiber intake reduces the risk of various types of cancer and other serious health problems such as ischaemic heart disease.

When people talk about including fibre (or "roughage" as my grandad used to call it) in their diet, they are mostly thinking of wheat bran - proprietary products such as All Bran, Sultana Bran and Weetabix are often recommended by GPs, along with wholegrain bread. But what if you're trying to exclude gluten from your diet? Are there any other sources of fiber available?

Dried Fruit

In fact, despite the overwhelming attention paid to wheat bran as a source of fiber, there are many other sources available. Fiber is found in plant stems, roots, leaves, pods and seeds. Rice bran or soy bran is probably the easiest like-for-like substitute for wheat bran, but you can get your fiber from peas and beans, nuts or dried fruit, and many fruits and vegetables.

Some sources are fairly obvious. For example, celery is very noticeably fibrous, particularly the older outer stems.

Sources of fibre suitable for the gluten intolerant include:

rice (brown or white, though the brown has a greater fiber content) and rice products, rice bran

possibly oats (although these may also cause symptoms in some people)

pulses/legumes: baked beans, broad beans, butter beans, French beans, haricot beans, runner beans, soya beans, soya bran, lentils, peas

salad and stirfry vegetables: beansprouts, beetroot, celery, cucumber (with the skin on), lettuce, peppers, radishes, spring onions, tomatoes, watercress

green vegetables: broccoli, Brussels sprouts, sprout tops, spring greens, spinach

root vegetables: carrots, parsnips, potatoes (especially if eaten with their skins), swede, turnips

other vegetables: cauliflower, leeks, mushrooms, parsley, sweetcorn

crisps (especially if prepared with the skin left on)

fruit: apples, apricots (fresh or dried), avocado pears, bananas, blackberries, blueberries, cherries, blackcurrants, cranberries, gooseberries, goji berries, grapes, grapefruit, huckleberries, lemons, melon, oranges, passion fruit, peaches (fresh or dried), pears, pineapple, plums, raspberries, strawberries, currants, dates, figs (fresh or dried), prunes, raisins and sultanas

So, can you include fibre in a gluten free diet? Yes, yes, and yes again.
