Anxiety Attacks and the Foods That Help Us Fight Them


Now we'll turn our attention to the foods you'd be wise to eat. Diet really is so important if you want to combat your Anxiety from a position of strength. By that I mean that if your diet is very acidic, then conquering Anxiety Attacks and the Anxiety that follows is going to be all that much harder. Once your diet's sorted out and your body's back in balance, then at least you're starting on level ground.

So let's see if we can help you with your diet and put you on the right road to start your recovery.

Believe it or not, fruit juice, too, is alkaline and is very good for you. Plenty of fruits and raw vegetables are the ideal, but I can well understand how uncooked vegetables sound to many people. At least don't cook them until they're a mush!

Protein-wise, 50 grams a day should suffice, unless you happen to have a job that's very strenuous, or you engage in heavy workouts and a lot of road work and running generally. Then obviously you'd require more. The protein intake itself should consist of 7% animal protein, (or the vegetarian equivalent), or 36 ounces of good yoghurt.

Following is a list, a very partial one I might add, of fruits and vegetables that you'll find will greatly assist you in your battle against Anxiety.

Green Beans,
Peas, (fresh or frozen),
White Potatoes,
Dried Figs,
Dried Dates,
Sweet Potatoes,
Brussels Sprouts
and Raw Spinach.

Now, if you read through this list, but find there's something you like by way of a fruit or vegetable that isn't there, don't worry. It's almost certainly quite acceptable. The great thing about eating like this is that not only is it helping your Anxiety, you're going to feel so much better.

I'm most fortunate. I'm married to a lady who knows all about diet, what we should and shouldn't eat, so the meals she prepares are always balanced and varied. Heaven knows how she keeps thinking them up!

I'm lucky, too, in that I'm as skinny as a rail, but even so, the sort of diet I've suggested isn't for slimming, necessarily. It's to arm yourself in your fight against our common enemy, Anxiety.

The foods to avoid are things like big, stodgy cakes and buns, white bread, indeed anything that looks as though it'll slow you down.

Edible Landscaping With Tropical Fruit Trees


Tropical fruit trees make wonderful additions to any South Florida landscape. Combine plants with lush green foliage, brightly colored flowers of all shapes and sizes to create an low maintenance, attractive outdoor design. Get creative and intersperse your fruit trees with other native tropicals and add a water feature or secluded seating area. The choices are endless, but the best part comes with the harvesting of this edible landscape.

Here is a list of some of the tropical fruit trees you're most likely to have success with in the South Florida climate. In an effort to inspire you, we've, also included some of the more exotic varieties you may never have heard of.

Avocado: Introduced to the area in 1833, the South Florida climate is ideal for growing this nutritious fruit. There are over 56 different varieties with summer, fall and winter growing seasons. The thick skin is green, and can be smooth or rough textured, and teardrop, round or football shape, depending on the species. Avocados have more fat than most fruits, but they are an excellent source of potassium and Vitamin A, and are used in salads, guacamole, and taste great scooped right out of the shell.

Trees are 40-60 feet in height and produce large quantities of fruit that do not ripen until they are picked or fall to the ground.

Growing Conditions: Sunny location with well-drained soil. Season: January-June.

Caimito - Star Apple: This is an ornamental evergreen tree with sweet purple or green fruit and shiny green leaves with a brown underside. The fruit is sweet and gelatinous.The trees range from 25 to 100 ft in height.

Growing Conditions: Well-drained soil with no chance of flooding.. Season: Late May-March.

Carambola - Star Fruit: Plant produces a large fleshy berry, 2-6 inches in length, with a waxy, yellow skin. A cross-section slices produces a perfect star shape - hence the name. The trees are considered small to medium in height (35 feet max), with dark green leaves and flowers.

Star fruit is great served in salads or as an iced juice drink, canned, dried or preserved. Not advised for people with kidney disease due to high concentration of oxalic acid.

Growing Conditions: Sunny location with protection from the wind. Season: July-September, November-February.

Mango: Native to Asia and India, mango trees have been growing in Florida for at least 100 years. These medium to large trees (up to 100 feet) have a number of varieties and produce a hearty crop of tasty fruit. When first picked, mangoes are light green, but are best eaten when the fruit softens slightly and and skin takes on a yellow, red, or orange color. The fruit is a good source of vitamins A and C and tastes great in salads, breads, or pureed.

Growing Conditions: These trees are tough and easy to grow. Season: May-October.

Passion Fruit: This vine produces purple, yellow or reddish colored fruit surrounded by an sweet, orange pulp. The juice makes a wonderful punch.

Growing Conditions: Passion Fruit vines should be planted in an area where they can be supported by a fence or trellis in a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Season: June-December.

Tamarind: This is a large tree (up to 80 feet), with rough bark, twisting branches and evergreen foliage. Flowers are a pale yellow with red veins that appear in early summer. The fruit is hidden in brown pods and contain large seeds in a sticky, brown edible pulp. The "molasses like" pulp can be used to flavor sauces and steak sauce. Season: April-June.

Favorite Garden Vegetables, Part 3 - Butterstick Summer Squash


You'll have a bountiful harvest of delicious yellow squash if you grow just a few plants of my favorite variety -- Butterstick. A zucchini-like squash, Butterstick is a good variety to grow if you like yellow summer squash. They are handsome, prolific and delicious.

We are probably all a bit tired of the dark green zucchini squash that is hard to give away to your neighbors. You won't have that problem with Butterstick, because you'll want to keep it for yourself. Let's take a close look at Butterstick summer squash to see how it might earn your regard as one of the favorite vegetables in your garden.

Here are the reasons that Butterstick summer squash is one of my favorites:

It grows easily and eagerly. Like other squash varieties, Butterstick is easy to germinate and grows quickly. You'll find the plant is sporting blossoms just after it has a few mature leaves on it and measures only a foot across. In another week, it comes out quickly with nice yellow fruit.

You get an abundant crop. Butterstick provides a bounty of squash, more than zucchini. It isn't uncommon to have 6 or more fruits forming at the same time.

Butterstick fruit is similar in shape to a zucchini. Long and slender when young, and more chubby in appearance as it gets a bit older. It is good for slicing across to create "rounds", or slicing lengthwise to serve as "sticks". Let it get larger and cut in half lengthwise to use as a "boat" for you favorite ground meat stuffing.

Delicious flavor. You'll find that Butterstick has a nice mild, yet rich flavor. It goes very well with cheese and creamy sauces. The first year we grew Butterstick, we ate it two meals a day during the growing season, and never tired of it. A regular green zucchini is bland by comparison.

Dries and freezes well. If you can't have it fresh, then you can dry or freeze it, and you'll still enjoy it's delicious flavor.

Grow it to any size you want. Like any of the zucchini type squash, when about 6 inches in length, they are a gourmet treat. Our experience shows that Butterstick has small seeds even when the fruit is allowed to grow to a larger size. Seeds become an issue at 14 inches or more, but the flesh remains delicious and tender even if you allow the fruit to grow to the size of your forearm.

Handsome and modest size bush. Butterstick grows on a handsome bush that sports deeply serrated and mottled leaves. The plant remains a modest size, so two can be easily grown in a 3 by 6 foot garden space.

So, there you have it. A beautiful modest sized plant that is easy to grow and produces an abundance of delicious fruit that serves up well anytime you wish to harvest. Extra fruit can be frozen or dried to bring back the delicious memories of summer in the middle of the winter. If you only grew Butterstick summer squash, you wouldn't want for any others.

Dried Plums and Figs - Super Foods to Eat During the Winter


One of the most common pieces of advice to help runners stay in tip top shape is to eat several types of fruits and vegetables. However, during the winter there are fewer types of fruits and vegetables available to start with. You can get around this by stocking up on dried plums and figs because they are packed with several nutrients, such as fiber, iron, potassium, and calcium.

These two super foods contain 100 and 110 calories per serving, respectively. Aside from having lots of calcium, dried plums have contain about thirty percent of our daily need for vitamin K, an essential vitamin that is also important for good bone health.

When you buy your dried plums and figs, they should feel soft and plump. If stored in airtight containers, and in a cool, dark, and cold place, they will last for months. You can choose to buy your dried plums with or without pits. Figs have a brown color to them when they are dried, as they are produced from mission or green figs.

You can make stews with your dried plums and figs. You can have just the plums and figs with chicken broth and other fruits and vegetables. Or, you can throw in some beef for a heartier meal. One other thing you can do is stuff them into pork loin. Chop them up and mix them with nuts, feta cheese, and greens to make a nutritious salad. However, there nothing wrong with having them straight up as a snack!

Primal Snacks For Kids


You've transitioned to a primal or paleo diet and you're feeling really good. It's comfortable to you and you've settled into some favored meals. But just what do you do about snacks for the little ones? Kids are burning energy at a massive rate and almost always hungry. Are there primal snack choices for them?

You bet there are! Here are quite a few primal snack ideas:

Nut butters: these are a favorite of kids everywhere. You may be trying to avoid peanuts like many other primal families. That doesn't mean your kids can't enjoy these easy spreads, however. There's a wide range of nut butter available. My family's favorite is one made locally with almonds, vanilla extract, and palm oil. It tastes so good we can't believe there's no sugar in it! You can also get butters made from cashews, sunflower seeds, and many other nuts and seeds.

You can serve nut butters in a variety of ways. My kids like them by the spoonful. You can also serve them on various veggies and fruits for a crunchy, tasty snack.

Nuts and Seeds: These of course run along the same lines as the above snack, but they're not quite as fun;) Nuts and seeds make a great "on the go" snack for you and for your kids.

You can combine nuts and seeds with berries and dried fruits for a primal trail mix. You should limit the amounts of dried fruits because drying does tend to concentrate the sugar. But as an addition to a nutrient-dense mix of nuts and seeds dried fruits really shine.

Canned fish: One of the only canned foods you'll find on a primal diet, canned fish of various kinds make good primal snacks. Fish is very good for children and most children will eat canned fish. You can make canned tuna into tuna salad and serve with celery, or serve with crunchy homemade vegetable chips.

You can also make a really good dip with canned salmon. Many children will eat sardines right out of the can.

These foods are quick and easy to serve and rich in fats and oils that enhance your child's brain development.

Smoked fish and Homemade Jerkies: These two foods are quick and easy to serve and most kids love them, especially homemade beef jerky. Smoked fish has the benefits of canned fish above, and perhaps more due to the gentler smoking process. Homemade beef jerky is very nutrient dense and great for kids' developing jaw muscle strength!

Fruits and Vegetables: Fruits and vegetables have been highlighted several times above in tandem with other things, but they also shine on their own. Serve your kids these tasty treats in the whole form most of the time. You can serve them with fat-rich dressings and saute fruits in butter for better nutrient absorption (make your own dressings). Vegetables should make up the bulk of your primal kid's carbohydrate intake.

Dairy: Some argue that dairy isn't very primal, but many primal families enjoy dairy. Milk, cheese, yogurt, and kefir can all make nutrient dense snacks your little ones will love.

Remember when you're shopping for snacks that fresh produce in season is best. Choose quality seafood and meats for snacks you're going to prepare for your children, as well. Get foods that are raised or caught ethically and cleanly if at all possible. This is best for the environment, and most importantly, these foods will give your kids the most health benefits.

Miracle Fruit Trees - The Bushy Plants That Produce Miracle Berries


Miracle fruit trees are found in their native region of tropical West Africa. Synsepalum dulcificum is the binomial name of the more commonly known miracle fruit (or miracle berry). The fruit from the tree can be eaten fresh. When eaten, it causes the tongue to experience bitter and sour food as sweet-tasting for over a period of 30 minutes to two hours.

The miracle berry can be taken fresh from one of the miracle fruit trees, but be sure to consume it immediately after picking from the bush. This is to ensure that you are taking it in its best form. It is, however, a safe idea to make sure that it is washed and cleaned thoroughly before taking it. This is to ensure that no microorganisms that can cause illnesses will march into your body due to eating an unclean berry.

Recently a company has produced miracle berries in tablet-like form, which can be chewed or simply left to dissolve on the tongue. These tablets are claimed to contain the fruit extract in its natural form. They make the tablets by keeping them freeze-dried right after picking them from the bush of one of the miracle fruit trees. After they are frozen and dried, it they grind it into a powdered form which is then compressed into tablets, ready to be eaten.

To keep its natural and fresh state, the tablets are placed in sealed blister packs of about 10 tablets and then sealed again in plastic or metallic packaging. However, as it is best stated, everything done too much has a negative effect. So the best way to be safe is to keep everything in moderation. In general, just follow the directions by the manufacturer and you won't have a problem. Another important thing to do is to keep oneself abreast with any updates about the miracle berry. Too often, we do not think about the value of the foods we take just as long as we relieve our hunger pangs. This is especially true for those of us who live a fast-paced life, busily going from one responsibility to the next on automatic pilot mode, without much though on what we eat or how we eat it.

Before we know it, we have gained unwanted weight, we are experiencing mood swings and we sometimes feel lethargic or out of sorts. A Glycemic Index List can help us determine which foods to take and which ones to avoid to get the highest nutritional value of the foods we eat and also provide us with better health and all-around well-being.

Based on studies conducted by the Stanford Center for Research in Disease Prevention, the following Glycemic Index List can provide us with optimum health and general well-being.

Also monitor your sugar intake because aside from causing decay, sugary foods can also be high in calories that contribute to weight gain.

5. Eat less salt. Too much salt can raise your blood pressure.

6. Drink lots and lots of water to keep your body well-hydrated.

Rosh Hashanah Party Menu Ideas for Celebrating a Time-Honored Occasion


Rosh Hashanah is a traditional Jewish holiday, celebrated in September with family and friends. A lot of food is available during the entire celebration; here are just a few ideas:

Traditionally every morning during the month of Elul the Shofar, a trumpet, is blown. Prayers and religious poems are said during the two day celebration. Typical menu items will include Apple Galette, Bread, Apple walnut tortes, lemon roasted chicken, and fish fillet with leeks. You will also find lamb on the menu during Rosh Hashanah.

For lamb you will need 1 boned and trimmed lamb shoulder, 2 teaspoons of ground cumin, freshly ground pepper, ½ teaspoon of fresh thyme, salt, 4 tablespoons of olive oil, ½ cup chopped onion, 1 carrot peeled and chopped, 1 celery stalk chopped, 1 teaspoon rosemary, 1 cup dry red wine, 2 cups of lamp stock, 6 ounces of tomatoes, 5 ½ ounces of almonds, 4 pitted prunes, and 4 dried apricots. You will cook the vegetables until they are no longer coarse, brown the onion, and fry the lamb. Once each ingredient is combined, you will then bake the lamb in the oven at 450 degrees for an hour.

Fruit is also very important for the celebration. You will find dates, oranges, grilled apples, pineapples, figs, and melons are apart of many dishes as well as eaten by themselves. They are a delicious and healthy way to balance out the fried foods and pies also commonly enjoyed.

Many varieties of dessert pies, tarts, cakes, pastries and the like are often served for dessert during Rosh Hashanah. These often incorporate the fruits mentioned above, as well as nuts, cinnamon and dried fruit.
