What's So Bad About Gummy Fruit Snacks?

One might think that gummy fruit snacks are good for you since they're everywhere and contain many popular cartoon characters. In reality however, they're nothing but a processed sugar that's disguised to look healthy. So if you're feeding your kids these things, you might want to consider a healthier alternative.

These sugary sweets have actually been around since the early 1900's, but didn't become popular until the 1980's.  Their popularity soared because of their ability to be molded into hundreds of different shapes and sizes.

Yet what many of us don't realize is that they are pumped full of corn syrup, gelatin, partially hydrogenated oils, artificial flavors and colors. And because they contain gelatin, they are often sticky in consistency, which can easily lead to tooth decay. That is why many dentists do not recommend giving these to children at all.

And while many may argue that they do contain some juice, it's not nearly enough to even be considered beneficial. And while you may think that the organic ones are better, think again! Even those contain unhealthy ingredients that are disguised and are just as bad for your kids.

Besides being bad for your teeth, they can also cause heart disease, diabetes and obesity in children. So instead of offering a snack that has no nutritional value whatsoever, why not offer a better choice such as fresh fruits. They offer an excellent source of vitamins and fiber.

If your child is picky you could also offer dried fruits. However take care in doing so since these can be just as bad for you if they're loaded with sugar and other artificial ingredients. If he or she won't accept either one, you might want to try introducing them to a fruit juice. Although juice doesn't contain nearly as many nutrients as the real thing, it still has some nutritional value and a much better healthy alternative. Just be sure it is 100% natural and not a cocktail since it contains corn syrup. Eat right and live better for your children's sake and your own.
